I painted the base coat for the walls, but no, I'm not a real artist - friend of the family painted the Winnie the Pooh mural. We can call in favors pretty well here at the Jenn and Heff house.

Oh, and damn straight there's an Eeyore there... Donkeys rule, obv.


No, I couldn't convince anyone to put a table or deck of cards in the mural, that would have been too much....

after a Wednesday where I busto quickly from the Mookie (AK v KK all in pre and I don't get there) and then manage to lose every flip in every SnG I play, I decided to take a different tack Thursday: Just play the $55 tourneys at 9:30 and see what I could do in a large field, double stack tournament.

Well, it took a while to get going, but I end up running deep in both..

FTP, finish 77th of 1086 for +$60 profit... I flat KK on the button in a multiway pot looking to tarp, and sure enough, the open raiser spikes a set with his deuces on the J62r board and I don't resuck. Silly me.

Stars, I freaking final table bubble the 70K guaranteed - 10 of 1329, +$600 to the good.

I had an average stack with 10 players to go and managed to dump it all in a few hands. I finally openshove A4s for 15BB into 55 in the blinds that called off half his stack and held. I got pwned after playing pretty well for six hours.

Of course I also managed to shove JTo into aces and flop top two pair, so it all balanced out.... but yet another night where I can see that five-figure payout just dancing in front of me, and I can't quite get there. I should be pleased with the session, but right now I'm just grumbly that I'm not still shoving chips around.

One thing I noticed playing both tourneys simultaneously - the FTP structure plays much deeper for the first 4-5 hours - but the Stars structure flattens out nicely, around the final three tables, to allow for plenty of play late. There's merit to both ways of doing things, but I prefer things to move slower later rather than early. I tend to play better with mid-size, 30-40BB stacks anyway.

Anyhow, I'll get there someday, I hope.

and what I did for my Tuesday

... at pretty much the same time, finished up a 90-man KO SnG in second for about +350 in profit, and took down the Skillz Stud/8 tourney (only nine players, but a win is a win)

When I play limit tournaments, I really don't do things right - I tend to play a high-variance game and watch my stack yo-yo like crazy in the early to mid stages.

I'm always amazed how much most people agonize over calling a limit raise on the river, especially in split pot games - there are very few spots where it's proper to bet/fold.

Point 2 is probably why point 1 exists for me, lol.
I get valuetowned a LOT in limit, even when I'm playing well.

Anyhow, I ran hot and hit well at the final table and basically coolered everyone in accumulating a big stack, and went from there. Looking at leaderboard, it's my fourth Skillz win of the year (two were in the BBT4), so not too shabby.

One thing I'm noticing as I'm going through my records over the last year - I really, really play feast or famine in my tourneys and SnGs.... There's a ton of 18-person SnG streaks where I finish something like 18- 16- 18 -1 -14 - 2- 15 - which is still profitable in the long run, but man it looks ugly on paper.

No wonder people think I'm such a muppet.

So Wednesday was a ridiculous night of juggling a bunch of deep stacks in three tourneys.

- The AIPS $1 rebuy
- The Mookie
- A Stars $5.50 2r1a I stumbled into via late registration....

At some point in the evening I was a top 5 stack in each tournament with a deep stack. I held the chip lead in AIPS and the Mookie simultaneously for about 15 minutes. And what do I get for this?

AIPS 17th
Stars 122th
Mookie 4th for bubble boy.

For a night where everything ran so well and I was crushing and cruising, I crashed and burned in really shitty spots....

Second hour in the Stars 5.50 2r1a - I've managed to run up a nice stack after the add-on, and if I hold here, I get a top 10 stack with almost 200 BB. Nice shove on the flop, pal. You push over 50BB out there to win 8BB in a five-way limped pot.

That one ended conventionally - I get a stack, it shrinks, it grows, it finally gets short and I run AQs into TT and AK and don't get there - 122 of 955, $3 profit, whee.

AIPS was so so strange - IT"S A ONE-DOLLAR REBUY - yet no one got silly with rebuys, half the table either sat out or left without rebuying - I ended up playing most of the first hour three and four handed with Scott Long and whoever else bothered to sit in -

I did manage to hit two big hands to run up to 13K at the break for a top 10 stack with only 5 rebuys... but whatever is going on with all these accounts from Russia and Brazil raiding the freeroll satellite to these tournaments, it's really hurting the actual play of the tournament. God forbid AIPS ever tries a six-max or heads-up event with all these absent qualifiers.

Anyhow, I play well here, but do manage to spike two outers twice for huge pots to bad beat people (KK<88 AI pre, 8 on flop - then A4 v QQ AI on J4x flop, 4 on river), so it wasn't all expert play.... And then I spew here in a spot where the villain is probably never dumb/bad enough to fold, even though I am screaming I haz flush you are drawing... Semibluff screws me again, way to spew off 50BB, big guy. Stack off drawing to three outs.

I really, really felt that fourth banana on its way - and I knew that shoving the turn was a bad idea. I hate when I get these stupid ideas in my head in crucial spots.

Ah, finally the Mookie: Here I play squeaky tight - I raise fold a lot, play very cautiously post flop, but generally get people to stack off with TP into me when I've got them crushed - and just have a HUGE stack heading to the final table - 22K at 200/400, or something like that.

And yet I start paying less attention (probably focusing on AIPS and 2r1a tables as well) slow down and the stacks get shallower... and call off in a spot I hate, but I can't really fold it postflop either. BTW, joelpokergod is starting to own my soul in a HighOnPoker-like fashion. He always freaking has it or gets there.

Now, if I cared about the $46 bubble, I should fold and get pwned there by every Ax holding he has along with the pairs that are currently ahead. - After all, I still have a second place stack with 20BB if I fold. But with 10 outs twice, and maybe I'm in front right now.... ugh.

Anyhow, what did we learn from tonight's play, which despite all it's fun, was basically a monetary wash? I mean, I cashed in two of three events for like no money.

1) What's the common factor in all these busto hands? I play an OK holding in a raised pot, and have a reasonably strong hand given the board- but that doesn't mean shit, because my hand doesn't fare well vs. any reasonable villain holding, and people who are not named heffmike do not play large pots out of position without a huge hand and/or draw. Must learn to pot control or dump those hands to multiple barrels, because most players just aren't donking into you twice in a raised pot without the goods.

2) As much as I like playing these series - I'm honestly trying to make the best, most efficient use of my time pre-babygirlheff. Playing tourneys where I only make $100 if I win may not be the smartest thing to do. Now I don't play AIPS or Mookie to make bank - I play because I'm a competitive muppet and want to win, and like the series and players - but if I'm going to spend three hours multitabling MTTs, I probably need to have a bigger potential payoff than that.

I just feel like I wasted a bunch of time by making loose GAMBOOL decisions that cost me my stack in spots where I could have folded and regrouped - if I was just a little more patient.

To be honest, I'm more just annoyed I put myself in a good position to take down multiple tournaments tonite and failed to follow through because of my own muppetness. Screw the money or the titles or whatever: I don't like it when I make poor decisions, period.

Going to be off the grid for a few days trying to install a floor, so hopefully I have a basement done by the weekend.

I actually like razz, like most people, right?

and it's never driven me nuts like Stud high - so it was good to see two full tables for Skillz Tuesday... I played like an old man nit, value bet everything and made my draws whether I needed to or not... right up until the final table.

Anyway, sucks to get boned like that twice, but it's Razz, that'll happen. 5th of 16 isn't awful.

Playing Razz just relaxes me in a manner unlike any other poker game - so much easier to "get there" by not actually making your hand... I always figure I'm bricking anyway, so anytime I draw well it's a little nugget of joy.

Anyhow, to update on the Hand History project - FTP finally got back in touch with me today and started shipping everything - still missing some dates, but it looks like I'm getting a reasonable amount of data back...

Wednesday is Mookie, but also the AIPS $1 rebuy.... which already has 160 players in it.
The first hour could be epic comedy. I'd be surprised if I'm under 20 rebuys.

So I play the Mookie Wednesday night, and manage to NOT bust out in the first 15 minutes. Instead I drop 2/3rd of my stack when I run KdTd into AKo on a Kxx two diamond flop and don't get there. I nit up, make some key double ups (A5>33, KK>JJ, QQ>JJ and TT) and somehow right the ship and make the final table....

...where I finish ninth. Standard openshove for less than 10BB with A9o, big stack behind me tanks for 15 seconds before reshoving with AKs.

No matter, hey, I'm running some 180-man tourney and have a fuckton of chips around the payout bubble, manage not to hold AKs against A5o, then shove AJ into QQ and AT into AQ, but still manage to make the final table with a workable stack...

...where I finish ninth, again. I manage to not open or shove two straight pots when I would have turned the nutz, so the very next pot I openshove my 12BB stack and run into aces.

Meh, that's ok, Thursday a sonogram is scheduled to see babygirlheff as we start hitting the homestretch now, with less than 90 days to go. It's one of those 4-D scans where you're supposed actually be able to see stuff...

...except that said babygirl keeps shoving her head everywhere but where you can get a clear view, so as a result her image looks like giant fuzzy pumpkin...


Well, I guess I can call all of this running well after all.

Anyhow, things are generally running smooth, yay us.

ah, let's see... HersheyPark was fairly impressive as far as theme parks go... The only downsides were 1) a lack of ahem, adult beverages - I get spoiled by Busch Gardens, which of course will have plenty of cold beer - and 2) a fairly spread out footprint, more rectangular than compact ...but I'll give credit for a bunch of coasters from wooden to modern steel, and the water park smack dab in the middle is a nice touch.

Anyhow, so long as you can put up with the usual long lines, and the amazing show of just horrid, shitty tattoos people manage to slap on themselves - it's not such a bad spot for a family weekend junket.

Haven't played much lately, but when I have, I've been a massive overaggro spewtard OOP where I'm convinced everyone is raising me light, and have just not been paying attention/thinking too deeply. So, I'm in a tread-water mode until I shape up and play smarter again.

In other news - I managed to accidentally shitcan my saved hand histories for the last few years (don't ask) - so I figured I would try to ask Stars and FTP as a test of customer support if they can resurrect them.

Stars: Initially responded within an hour, had links up to EVERYTHING in two hours, later sent tournament summaries for MTTs and SnGs in a followup email the next morning.

Tilt: Initial automated response insta-shipped back to me. Nothing further 24 hours later.

Yeah, that parallels most people's experiences.
Too bad I historically run way, way better on FTP.

Since I've got a bunch of hand histories now - what do people use to track their own stats nowadays, PokerTracker or HoldemManager? Which is better for tracking MTTs/SnGs?
