well that was a waste of time.

41 of 50. I have no skillz, obv.

Just to make it clear, I HATEHATEHATE hatehatehate HATEHATEHATE hatehatehate HATEHATEHATE hatehatehate HATEHATEHATE hatehatehate HATEHATEHATE hatehatehate HATEHATEHATE hatehatehate HATEHATEHATE hatehatehate Stud high.

At least I could watch QueensUp, since we started at the same table. I won my first couple of hands when split kings improved to trips, and then a flush to get up to 3500 in the first ten minutes. And then the bottom just fell out.

Everytime I raise on third with just an up card, I get callers and have to fold.
When I actually have a hand, I get no action, or I get called down, improve, and still lose.

Let's see, start with AAx, make aces up and watch someone river a straight with multiple dead cards out.
run KKx, making kings up, into weirdly slowplayed rolled up 9s (doubtful, since they check called down every street before donking seventh) or rivered trip 9s
QQx runs into trip 4s... you get the picture.

Oh, I played silly too. Checked trip fours twice and let someone runner runner me for Kings full.

Actually, what really tilted me more than my bad slowplay is that they bet/called sixth and check/called seventh with Kings full... I guess I could have had quads or something?

Finally dunzo here. Yeah aces are dead, but the one time I could actually hit aces up and win, I don't.

Not to mention I bother to play a $25 satellite for at PLO8 SCOOP event on Stars - 9 players, 2 seats - and bubble in third. Got shortstacked idiots reshoving AK97 and getting there on a Q52 flop. FML.

Normally I'm in a good mood. I played well this month. Not good enough, but well.

But I am not in a good mood at the moment.

So it's a new month tomorrow. Joy.

river, uh, spewchasers report

Start out with a reasonably annoying table of good players…. Lucko, RecessRampage, a couple of live pros in Lee Childs (acumen53) and Scott Neuman (kickyourace).. I flat a couple of raises with hands that don’t flop well, then play an odd hand with kickyourace…

Blinds 15/30, I have the JackAce UTG+1 and 2580 in chips
I open for 90, kickyourace flats in the cutoff, all fold.
Flop T35, two hearts. I don’t have one. I check, he checks behind.
Turn 4h, so I check, he bets 90, I raise to 275, he calls.
River 2h, and I may as well tell a consistent story with my “flush” and value bet my wheel.
I lead for 500, he calls with 5h5c for the flopped set and rivered fourflush.

So one orbit in and I’m already down almost half my stack. Nice. I spewtard it back here.

Blinds STILL 15/30, I have AhKd on the button and 1670 in chips
Noldmax opens for 100 in the cutoff, I reraise for 300, all fold, he calls.
Flop Qd7d9c, he checks, I pot to 645, he shoves, I’m like w/e and call off the last 725.
I’m essentially racing Ad8d, but the turn and river come spades and I’m back in business with 3400 in chips.

I get into a weird dynamic with kickyourace.

I open the next orbit UTG to 90, he flats. All fold.
Flop QT5r, I lead for 175, he raises for 690, and I figure his air is better than mine and fold.

Then I avoid a cooler.

Kickyourace (4100) opens for 120 UTG+1, acumen53 (2900) flats, I’m really really tempted to call with ATo in the small blind but fold.
Flop AdQsTd. Ugh. Kickyourace opens for 160, acumen53 raises to 600, kickyourace calls.
Turn 4s, goes check check?
River Js. Kickyourace checks, acumen bets 1100, kickyourace calls
Kickyourace – AQo (lucky me)
Acumen53 – KdQd for the Royal draw on the flop and rivered straight.

With his tendency to passively play big hands on the flop in mind, this happens.

Blinds 25/50, I open with KJo in the hijack to 125, kickyourace flats in the small blind, all fold.
Flop 863r. He checks, I check.
Turn 8h, two hearts. He checks, I check again, trying to get a cheap showdown.
River Jh, he leads for 250, I snapcall… and see KhTh for the runner runner flush.

heffmike: you're too good, sir

And I’m too bad. This was not the best 20 minutes of poker I’ve played. Opening way too wide, playing too many pots out of position, getting pwned by everyone at the table. I needed to snap out of it and tighten up.

I raise AA to no action. I fold 22 preflop and watch as a four way pot develops on a 532r flop. But I haven’t missed the chip train just yet.

Blinds 25/50, I open KK UTG+1 to 125 with a 2325 stack.
NewinNov flats right behind me with a 2700 stack, all fold.
Flop Q22, I lead for 250, he minraises to 500, I reraise just to 1250, he calls (jeez)
Turn Tc, and I’m like, if he has a deuce or AA/QQ, oh well… I shove for 950, he calls with AQ and I double through.

NOTE: OMG! - Then I asked him to play "really tight" until I got home. The play ended and I got home around 11:15pm but apparently AQ was too much temptation for my son on a Q22 board and I was out. I was out and didn't get to play a hand, typical.

I ruckbox some more… shove over Recess’s turn donkbet after I flop a set to scarf up more chips… then..

Blinds 40/80, I have 6465 and 44 in the big blind.
Wwonka69 (2700) openlimps in MP, lucko (2600) completes his small blind, I check.
Flop 984 two spades yesyesyes. Lucko checks, I lead for 150, wwonka69 calls, lucko folds
Turn 6d, I lead again for 450, now wwonka69 raises to 1890, I pause before putting him in for his last 600, he calls off with Ah9h drawing dead… which is good because the river rolls off another 9 just to tease…..

heffmike: god, my tard image is working wonders tonite.

Now I’m first or second in chips with 9K and start getting refocused.

Recess and Lucko make my life easy by taking kickyourace’s chips in back to back hands – Recess AK>AQ all in preflop, Lucko by calling an 6BB shove with J7o, drawing live and spiking a J - and I make the first break in good shape.

But I didn’t get all the spew out of me. This is just horribad.

So yeah. After that I tighten back up and rebuild to around 8500. OMGitsPokerFool gets moved to my table, two to my right, with a big stack… and that should be fine…except he’s playing far more aggressively than I can ever remember him doing.

Example: OMGitsPokerFool - 13000, Me – 8500. We cover the table easily.

He open raises his SB to 600 at 100/200. I repop to 1800 with AQo. He fourbets to 4600. Ugh. I check stacks and points position, realize I have over 30BB and a decent table, wish I just flatted the raise and fold.

Any other time, I probably monkeyshove and try to flip/suckout.

After this, I slow down quite a bit the rest of the second hour. I try not to do anything else stupid as we get to two tables and the points bubble. I bounce between 6k and 8k until I get the one doubleup I need just after the money bubble pops.

Folds to me at 400/800/100 with KQo in the small blind.

I shove for 6500, nzgreen calls off with a 19K stack with J8s.

Board blanks. I’ll take it.

An orbit later, I openshove JJ for 11K. nzgreen calls all in for 11K – I barely cover – and I’d really really like to be flipping here..

Even better. He has 99 and I fade the two outer. Up to 24K now.

We get to the final table one hand later.

Seat 1: BuddyDank (20,362)
Seat 2: OMGitsPokerFool (31,277)
Seat 3: Joanne1111 (28,775)
Seat 4: heffmike (24,294)
Seat 5: Schaubs (7,229)
Seat 6: scottc25 (16,605)
Seat 7: Astin (24,308)
Seat 8: 1Queens Up1 (12,548)
Seat 9: ChampSampson (17,602)

So the only other player with a lot of points is Queens Up. I’ve been keeping an eye on his table, because what really matters is that I finish ahead of him tonite (behind by about 120 points)

We lose players pretty quickly – I cooler BuddyDank with AA>KK all in preflop to get up to 40K and drop the table to six players.

We almost lose QueensUp in sixth, but damn his aces have to hold vs. JTs.

PokerFool is opening a lot of pots for small raises, and I’m having a problem dealing with it – mainly because I’m as focused on outlasting QueensUp as getting deep. I repop a couple of times, but he’s starting to habitually repop my leads and raises, and I never really have a hand to shove over top of him.

We get to the third break and I’m safely second of six players – but I spew 9K back into PokerFool trying to get him off of third pair on the river…and so I decide to flip for stacks and get on a heater...

Seat 2: OMGitsPokerFool (75,575)
Seat 3: Joanne1111 (15,400)
Seat 4: heffmike (32,956)
Seat 7: Astin (11,315)
Seat 8: 1Queens Up1 (16,346)
Seat 9: ChampSampson (31,408)

Blinds 1000/2000/250, I open raise to 5775 with 77 in the cutoff, Champ shoves from his big blind, and I decide to race him for 16BB. He has AKo. Board Q495T. Yay me.

I openshove my small blind for 64K with 98o into Astin’s 11K short stack. He calls with QTs, but I flop the nutz (567r flop) and have him drawing to a runner-runner...

Next hand I limp my button with 57o and QueensUp checks his solo big blind.
Flop 432r. Good enough, he checks, I bet 5K, he shoves for 16K, I snap call and see A2o.
Turn 7, River blank, and now we’re three handed and I’ve got the mojo working.

Seat 2: OMGitsPokerFool (75,325)
Seat 3: Joanne1111 (10,900)
Seat 4: heffmike (96,775)

Of course, two hands later I open my button for 5775 with K6s, Joanne shoves for 13K. I hate life and call getting 3-1. She shows AKo, and despite turning a openend straight draw I do not get there (!!!!!) and she doubles through.

Anyway, I keep letting PokerFool run me over raising my leads, and keep doubling up Joanne like an idiot (she openshoves 26K at 1200/2400, I call (lol) with K9s and can’t beat her ATo) to become the short stack because I suck.

I finally cooler PokerFool – I open with ATo from the small blind for 9975 intending to snapoff a shove, PokerFool shoves 92K with A9o, I stick my 33K stack in and double through.

Finally PokerFool raises, Joanne shoves 20BB with 88, he calls all in with A6o and suddenly we’re headsup.

Seat 3: Joanne1111 (115,800)
Seat 4: heffmike (67,200)

I start chipping up OK. She openfolds her button twice when I have a big Ace :-
I make a horrid threebet/fold when she shoves over top of me and now I’m down almost 3-1.
Next hand I raise my button, she shoves, and I stack off for 15BB with KTo.
I’m behind (obviously) to A4o.
Flop AJ7 Turn Q (Bink) River K. Now I’m in front by a hair.

After that we’re basically even until here.

And that’s that.

Hopefully I never make that many bad plays again in one tournament. Just too much splashing around.

The fact I made second is a minor miracle.

To boot, I only gained 40 or so points on QueensUp., so I’m still behind him by over 70 points.

It’s great that I bumped up to second, but there are no mobneys for second place….

So I’m basically hosed, unless I get deep again tonite.

I love mixed games.

I hate playing Stud.

What a way to end the month.

damn, I almost called it...

Needed a first in Riverchasers tonite.
Finished second.

Go congratulate this one here FTW, short stacked like crazy three handed and got it done. KK>AQ all in pre for about 30BB heads up for her. That's the second time I couldn't close the deal on a second seat this month. Need to work on the heads-up game.

And if I ever needed a primer on how a goofball image, spewing chips all over the place, gets you paid in a lot of spots when you have it... and then show how to ruckbox by getting pair v. pair setups and spiking every draw... well, last night would be it. It was NOT an example of stellar Heff play, but I'll take it. I'll look at it later, but some hands were just LOLBAD.

This guy finished fourth... so I made up some points ground (jeez, I really need one of the point bubbles back now.....), probably enough to make tonite's STUD FEST matter. This should be fun.

roto yes, brit no

BritBlogger today was.. well, it just was....

I played some interesting hands with Chad, because I can never tell when he's going to try and run you over and when he's trying to play smart.

Blinds 25/50. I have Kd8d in the big blind and 1750 in chips. Chad has 2880.
Folds around, he raises the button to 150, I defend and call.
I had done this once already, we played a small pot I won with a river bet.

Flop JT7r. Goes check/check.
Turn 9, with two spades up. I lead the straight for 225, chad calls.
River 7s. I really really doubt he has a flush, but check intending to call almost any bet instead of leading to let him bruff/valuebet.
Chad checks behind with KJ. Smart.

Later we get moved tables, blinds now at 40/80.
I open raise 55 on the button for 225, chad defends his blind.
Flop K63, he checks, I think (mistake) and check.
Turn 6d, with two diamonds up, he leads 240 I call.
River 9c, he leads for 480. I don't think there are enough bluffs I can catch, I doubt he folds anything to a reraise, so I fold.

I boo-boo-ed this every street. I should bet the flop, and if I'm calling the turn I need to call the river here.
Of course, he probably pwns me with 77 there more than I catch him with AdQd...

Here's the busto hand - other than the silly minraising (because I'm too lazy to move the bet slider over to ALLZZZ INNSSS) and the fact that opening with ATs under the gun is a little light.. not really playing this any differently.

Not going to dump TP/nut floosh draw in this spot, points race be dammed or not.

So dunzo 34 of 49, and this after a lot of guys at the top of the points race were out early.

A couple of guys picked up some points, but I don't think anything that would change my situation that much.

Just win Monday or Tuesday, that's it :-)

Got the wifey to come out and play one time - she stacks Lightning36 when he openlimps AA and she catches bottom two on the flop from the big blind... then she runs KK into AA, and JJ into AK, to bounce in 19th.

In other news, I was doing a roto league live online draft at the same time, and continued my silly approach of only drafting Latin ballplayers.... It's a 7x7 league with holds, OBP and some other random stats, so strategy is a little different than a standard 5x5 league - and it sucks to have the first pick and not pick again until #28

I call the team hugochavezlovechild, but since I've got four times as many Dominicans, I probably should call it si merengue si instead...

goofing around....

So I spend Saturday delivering mulch for a Boy Scout fundraiser.... and finish up just in time to settle in for a relaxing Saturday night. Wife is out on a photo shoot, so time to sit back, finish the laundry, put on some NCAA hoops, drink some wine and play some tournaments.....

To be honest, later in the night, I really wasn't even paying attention too closely, so I'm sure I made some silly plays... and silly chat...

Yeah, so I obviously was provoking people on purpose.
Look out for those tarps with turned nine-high flushes on a paired board in O8.
It's amazing how much more chat goes on in a limit game than NL.

anyhow, the official tally.

Stars 1K HORSE - where the above chat comes from - final table, 5th of 184. I really don't remember much, other than the silly chat. When you get to a final table where everyone has 10-15BB, you either run goot or you don't. I'm sure I donked it up pretty good. $106.

Stars 30K - another $11 tourney - 365 of 3042, no cash. Nothing notable here. I don't do anything interesting, push the only big hands I have, double through twice and still outlast almost 90% of the field. zzzzzzzzzz.

Tilt 25K - 885 of 1292, out in first hour. I forgot how bad people play the 24+2 tourneys.

Tilt 35K - 61 of 1600. I think I actually played this one well - need to check to be sure.
At one point I had around 100K in chips at 500/1000 and was probably chipleader or close to it. Then I stopped winning 70/30 pots. Tried a squeeze here that is borderline at best to bounce. $71, whee

Why can't it be Wednesday every night?

Mookie always treats me well...

I have a mellow first hour where I play very nitty and only chip up to 3700 by the break.
The second hour has a lot more fireworks.

Blinds 60/120, I'm in the cutoff with 99, 4300 chips.
DakotaBlock limps UTG+1 with a 3K stack, folds around, I raise to 475, all fold, Dakota calls.
Flop 874r. Dakota checks, I lead for 975, Dakota minraises with only 600 more behind...
and yeah, this is the kind of hand you get hosed in. I stick the rest in, get to see 88 for top set.
Gotta love the undercard flop, as any paint would slow me down a bit.
I'm basically hosed no matter what Dakota's holding, but it's so hard to fold a JJ/TT/99 type hand in those spots.

Yeah, I ruckbox it back, though.

Blinds 80/160, I have 1400 in chips with 77 the cutoff.
Blinders opens for 480 right before me, I shove, then muhctim reshoves for 4K (ugh) Blinders calls.
Blinders, AKo
muhctim, QQ. oh boy.

Flop 982 (sigh) Turn T (could it be?) River 6 (BINK)

After that I get moved, and end up playing for stacks with the dreaded jackace.

Blinds 100/200, I raise UTG to 550 with AJo and a 4K stack, niktak (13K) flats right behind me, everyone else folds.
Flop A96, two diamonds, I check, niktak bets 1K.. and I just have this feeling I'm good, even with a shitty kicker- I just don't read AK/AQ.
I shove for 2500 more, he calls with ATo, and I hold to double through.

I get up to nearly 10K before I hit another pothole...

Now at 120/240/25, PJS JR (9K) opens for 654 in EP, BuddyDank (4K) flats on the button, I just call (10K) with AKo in the big blind.
Flop AJ6 with two clubs. Well, if I'm waiting to evaluate a flop, that's about what I'm looking for.
I check, PJ checks, Buddy bets 960, now I raise to 2300 to isolate, PJ folds, Buddy sticks his last 900 in, I snapcall... and see JJ for another flopped set.
PJ says he folded a J. Joy. Only way I get that involved, on a AJx flop.
Nice to shove into two sets in 30 minutes and still have an average stack.

Anyhow, I get to the second break 19 of 31 with 7k in chips - but after that I go really really carddead..
As in I go nearly three orbits without even playing a hand as we finally bust past the points bubble...

I chip down to 3500 before openshoving a few times, I finally get called and 33>A7 to get back up to 12K in chips...
But I make a couple of light plays where I don't get there...

Blinds 500/1000/125...

1) kickyourace in EP shoves for 3200, I reshove with K9 in the small blind to isolate, pick up the dead blinds/antes and gambool, I do not get there vs. A8 - so yeah, it's my fault he went on to win from there.....

2)I open shove 8500 with T9o (much rather shove with this type of hand than some A6o-type hand) Kevin_with_AK reshoves for 16K on the button with 66 (a touch light for half his stack, but that's exactly the kind of hand I want to fold out with a shove, so not a horrid play there)

...and the board throws up two aces (figures) and I do not spike to bounce in 17th...

...which wouldn't be a bad points night - I was actually pretty happy with my disciplined shortstack play from 31 players in until the last two hands..

...except that 125will was still in and finished 11th... and Shabazz Jenkins finished 9th... so I actually lost ground to both guys, and with just three tourneys left in March... I think I'm basically screwed for monthly points without a huge, huge run next week :-(

But whatever. Never say die, keep playing my game, keep having people think I'm silly.

I like waffles version better...

Compare and contrast...

I do useless PokerStove calculations here to justify obviously horrible play, of course.

FYI, I view this as an academic exercise where I might be wrong or right, but I don't have anything personally invested one way or the other. Flame away.. :-) Things have been too quiet lately, we need amusement....

EDIT: More LHE food for thought here from F-Train, who's way better than I am at this minibet stuff and would also probably tell me I suck...

I bubbled. happy now????

Yeah, well, once I misplay a couple of hands, I end up going out on the points bubble, 18 of 68, in the limit hold them extravaganza last night. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH.

Anyway, I'm sure PirateLawyer is happy now. As a wise Alabama man said....

TuscaloosaJohn: Pirate wins The Waffle award for tonight

after I hose PL pretty bad in a pot. But we'll come back to that...

First hour was relatively uneventful... end it at 3800, 26 of 60, which for me in a LHE game is GOLD, JERRY, GOLD.

Of note...

Very first hand with QueensUp..

He raises in MP, I defend in the big blind with Ah9h.
Flop 422, two hearts. I check, he bets, I raise, he threeballs, I cap.
Turn Ac, I bet, he calls,
River 7h, I bet, he calls, shows 88, I win.

an orbit later, I raise JTo in MP, he defends his big blind....
flop T62, two spades, he check calls my bet.
turn Qh, he checkraises, I call the raise.
river Qd, he leads, I pay off and get to see AQs..... a little stronger than I expected..

I get in a couple of interesting pots with Hoyazo...
I just monkeyed off a bunch of my stack the previous hand when Hoy raises from the cutoff, I threebet from the small blind with AA, he calls.
Flop AQ3r. I lead because check-raising is kind of obvious, Hoy tanks and raises, I decide to flat and make it look like AK/KK.
Turn Kd. I lead again, Hoy raises, I threeball, he caps, and there's no freaking way he has JT here.
River blanks, I bet, Hoy calls with 33 for the flopped underset.

I doubt it plays any differently when we both flop sets on a fairly dry board - but that was nice...

Later in hour two I either soulread him, monkey calldown like a limidonk, or (probably correctly) realize that he just doesn't care that much about these tourneys and is playing loose and carefree.

Hoy raises his button at 60/120 with a 1385 stack, I defend with A9o (monkee) and a 3830 stack.
Flop Q64r, I check, he bets, I raise, he threeballs, I call.
Turn 9s, I check call now that I actually have something to show down.
River Ks, putting three spades up, but I have the As. I check call again and see Ac2c.

I manage to get up to 13 of 26 by the second break... and shortly thereafter put PirateLawyer on megatilt... before the hand history, some observations.

*PL often tries to run people over. I've seen him turn up some interesting holdings on the river given his lines.
*He was running bad at the time (had over 8K, then started pulling a Wile E. Coyote with anvils falling everywhere, and dropped below 4K by this hand.)
*He is guaranteed to steam and tilt if you ever call him down light and hit, so there's EV there.
*Since he knows I call down light, he doesn't have to have a huge, huge hand here (multi level crap) and I might have more outs than I think.

anyhow, here it is.

Anyhow, what was I thinking?

Preflop, well, I put PL on two cards, opening with a wide range (at least that part was right), let me take the line of a big pair and see what happens. He will call the threebet and I will need to bomb the flop to sell it and get him to fold his overcards.

Flop, I really didn't care what came down, I was going to bet/threebet it and sell the AA-QQ line.. I obviously did not expect him to cap, but by then I'm getting nine billion to one and have to call 300 more and see the turn, because threebet/folding is beyond LOL. I do have a tendency to raise/bomb flops in limit when I'm sure all a person has is a weak top pair or overcards and I can put a little bit of pressure on, regardless of what I am holding. This is why I am not a great limit player.

By the way, most sane players do not try to felt 85s on a 877 board when they've been raised or bet at every opportunity pre and post flop, because that means overpair or some kind of flush draw with overs at the very worst. So touche.

Turn is interesting. I didn't put him on a flush draw after the flop, just an overpair or a random seven. So, I figure a 6 would be good, a four obviously, and maybe clubs if he doesn't have one. Basically, I caught just enough of the board to make me pitch another bet in the pot, but I didn't want to get raised off of it, so I make an aggressive call, lol.

Yes, I realize I don't beat anything but a maniac-level bluff at this point.

River is an easy check call once I get there. Why am I calling down otherwise, if not to showdown when I hit?

I would never, never, never do this in unlimited holdthem, but in limit, well, it's only another bet, you gotta accumulate chips somehow....

And yes, I would take the same line with a lot of hands (overpairs, flush draws) that beat 85 as well, even on the turn... just so I can showdown and see how bad I sucked out.

PL can tell you all how much I suck now.

Anyhow, after this I run bad enough to get bounced on the bubble

I open raise AKo at 200/400, pushmonkey72 defends his blind with only 800 more behind, so half his stack is already in preflop.
Flop 764r, he checks, I bet, he raises, I go ahead and get it in, he shows 53o for the flopped nuts. Sigh.

Later, at 500/1000, I openraise my button with Ac2c and 6200 in chips, cmitch folds (15K), but asphnxma (11K) defends his blind.
Flop A54, two spades. he checks, I bet, he raises, I call.
Turn 9s, he leads, I fold like a donkey.

F-Train says he had KK with the Ks. That sounds right. Wow, well played, nice line.
That's one of the few Aces I would raise preflop and find a fold with postflop.
That's also what I get for folding top pair in a heads up limit hand, I guess....

So I suck, and when we get to two tables, I open raise KcQc UTG at 600/1200 and only 3500 in chips, and get called in two places.
Flop comes AK4, and I feel like I need to bet at it, since if I check fold, now I'm at 2300 in chips and in the blinds the next two hands... Naturally, I lead, highonpoker raises, I call, turns a blank, I check call all in and see A4s and bounce on the points bubble.....

Yeah, that was bad and I should just open fold there.. but I have an inherent hatred of folding my way to any kind of bubble, points or cash. I'm sure that will cost me big money down the line....

Anyway, since everyone but QueensUp bounced early tonite that was high in points... I may, may still be in fourth, and still need to pick up 100-150 points to jump up to first, but only if I am lucky... I'm running out of time and thrown away a couple of good spots to cockroach my way into 60 or 80 points. So gotta make something happen soon.

Monday, March 23, 2009

uh, flushes suck, ok?

(or, how to shove your chips into the nizzles and feel OK about it)

Well, that was a pleasant way to start the week....

Only two hands of note in last night's Riverchasers... the first is a prime example why although I've made more money, BoneDaddy has more points in the BBT4 series so far...

Blinds 20/40, I have 2905 in the big blind with 9d4d (lol, I know)
Bone_Daddy84 opens for 120 in MP, all fold, I defend 'cause I fling poo like a monkee.
Flop AJTr. check check.
Turn 8d, putting a flush draw up, and now I've got a straight draw as well, but I check... and Bone checks behind..
River 6d, so I got there, and I may as well bet, so I lead for 300 into the 260 pot.
Bone tanks... and raises to 955... I don't like it, but he needs to show me a flush in this spot... and he shows me the nuts, Kd7d.

Ugh. Now if the positions are reversed, I might bet the flop and DEFINITELY bet the turn with the nut flush and straight draws... and jeez, K-high might be the best hand, build a pot for value, fold out weak jacks or eights... and if it's not the best hand, you have nine billion outs to the nizzles on the river to get paid off, so whatever...

But that's me. I like building pots and accumulating chips. Bone's done very well surviving and making hands when he has to, and doesn't gambool as much as I do, that's clear.

Hey, he got me to pay him off the only way I could (no way I bet if I make the straight with the Q, a King's in his range too much of the time) so well played on his end, I got pwned.

Never should be calling a river raise to begin with against most BBT players = you see the nuts or close to it every freaking time.

Definite bet/fold spot - villain dependent, of course.

Second hand of note, blinds are 40/80, I've built back up to 2300, I just openraised KK to no action, so now I've got 77 in MP.

Folds around, I openraise to the same 225. noollab and Julius_Goat call in the blinds. They both cover me, but not by much.
Flop A23 all clubs, I have the 7c.
Blinds check, I pot to 525. noollab tanks and flats, julius tanks and folds... I immediately think noollab either flopped the flush or has a pair-and-club type hand.
Turn 7d. Shit. Well, I'm stuck now. Noollab checks, and while it's likely I'm shoving into a flush, there's no way I can let him see a fourth club for free, and he may call with a Ax or two pair hand I have crushed...
Besides, I can root for the board to pair anyway.
I shove, noollab calls with KcJc for the second nizzles. I do not get the board to pair on the river, out 51 of 64.

Boo. Boo. Boo. I hate flooshes...

Gee, and I have the Baatan Death March of tournaments, limit hold them, to look forward to tomorrow. Yippie.

(more reverse mojo pls, k thx)

Sunday, March 22, 2009

oops I did it again... I do a negative EV thing today... instead to trying to squeeze out every point I can in the BBT4 series in the Brit Blogger Game, I decide to skip it and go play in the free bar poker series I donk around in instead, since it's the Tournament of Champions night, which I won the last quarter we did it in November... yeah, eschew a shot at $1500 for a hat/shirt/credit on your bar tab, whoo-hoo!

Anyhow, yeah, I won again. Another freeroll entry, woot. This one was so on autopilot...

I chip up quickly from the 7K starting stack to 12K (100/200 starting blinds, 30 min levels) by pot controlling hands when I flop a pair and get to showdown... when I actually have to think in a hand.

Blinds 200/400, I have 12K and cover the table. I open raise 77 UTG to 1200.
Wacky player flats on the button. She is very loose calling preflop but tight when raising, and I'm sure I'm in front right now.
Small blind takes a while to count his stack, tanks, finally shoves for 3500 total, BB folds, back to me now..
I think, decide that if I shove I fold out almost all of the button's holdings and can take the flip against the blind, even though I might be behind... I shove, she folds AT, but I can't spike vs. the allin's 99 and drop to 9K.

I short stack ninja for a while (once shoving 9K from EP at 500/1K on a button who has the big stack - 26K - and is a crazy asian who loves gambool... and I get him to fold 88, so he has some ability to fold) until I pick up AA and open shove for the third straight hand... he calls with KQs and I hold to double through.

Later, a meh player completes his small blind at 500/1k and I check with 32o in the big blind.
Flop comes A54, though. Whee. He leads for pot (!!!!!!!) and I blink and call.
Turn's a J, he checks, I bet 4K, he sticks the rest in for 3K more with J6 drawing dead.

At the final table, a decent player opens for 4K in EP at 500/1K.... I shove for 20K with AQs ( I cover him, barely)... he tanks and calls allin with AJo and I hold.

After that, I was on autopilot, gathering chips and winning pots until heads up, when I shove 33 for 10BB effective, get called by two overs and hold.

So that was nice. I like playing and winning live, even when it doesn't really count... Checking the blogger game, not playing didn't kill me that much.... I still need to get 150 points one way or the other no matter what anyone else does.. and so we'll start the final push tomorrow night in Riverchasers...

Why playing tournaments can drive you nuts....

I'm cruising along Top 5 in chips in a 10+1r1a Full Tilt tourney with 75BB over three hours in as we approach the money bubble .
Suddenly some momo starts to get the shovemonkey groove going on, and uses the whole "I gotta go excuse..."

Dealer: heffmike raises to 3,500
Dealer: FractalBob raises to 22,530, and is all in
Dealer: heffmike folds
Dealer: Uncalled bet of 19,030 returned to FractalBob
Dealer: FractalBob mucks

FractalBob: I need to leave now.

Nothing freaking tilts me more than this. Tournaments take 3-5 hours. People know this.

Why play if you can't see it through all the way?
Are you that sure you're that bad and won't make it deep?
Do you think you need to reverse level people to cover for your aggressive bubble play?
Do you have to resort to flipping for stacks, hoping to double through or go home because you can't play anything but a big stack and want to quit if you have to grind and work with an average stack?

I always figure this is a horrible lie - after all, if you really want to leave, sit out, log off, and blind out.
Or, raise/fold a few hands - whatever.. the "I'm shoving so I can get busted" meme is so, so full of shit.

As seen here - remember, we're only at 1000/2000, so these are ridiculous open shoves after the KK hand.

Note that this is a guy who's won almost 100K in donkament mobneys playing $100 tourneys.. but is still -22% ROI lifetime on FTP...
Do the math. He's in the hole almost 20K from tournaments. I guess one big score could erase that... and maybe he's a great cash game player... but still...
I know it's guys like this that give life to the poker ecosystem, but when they do shit like this..... ARRRGH.....

An UTG shove for over 30BB with A4o into my big blind, I wake up with a monster, and he still gets there.
I wasn't steaming or anything (Lent mellowness still in effect) - but I was a little frustrated with the whole chain of events

golden29: lol
FractalBob: Damn!
golden29: omg
heffmike: see. you CANT try to go out like that.
heffmike: freaking idiot douche.

FractalBob: Now I have to play to win
heffmike: right.
heffmike: don't even start, momo

And how do I leave this glorious tournament?
Small blind open shoves his 44K stack into my 23K stack at 1200/2400/300 and I instacall with AKo.
He shows Qh7d.
Flop KJ8 all diamonds. Turn Ah. River 3d. C'mon, I get Lucko'd and am out 23rd of 382. Boo.
Fractal finished 11th, haha.

At least I finaltabled a PLO8 tourney on Stars for small mobney as well - 7th of 144.

So I have had some good runs recently - but man, have I been stuck in some ick spots late in tournaments... :-(

your table is waiting, again...

At least I can close out a week well. Another final table run in the Mookie.....

Another strange first hour, where I seesaw up to 4K, down to 1K, up to 5K, and back to 3400 by the first break.

I get AA/KK four times but only get action once to double through.
I start to notice I'm getting a silly amount of action whenever villains have top pair.

Blinds 25/50, I open to 125 in MP with TT and about 3K in chips.
ScottMc calls on the button, Sting70 calls in the big blind.
Flop J67r, I lead for 300, ScottMc shoves for 1650... I get confused, talk myself into calling and get shown AJ. That was pretty bad on my part.

Later, blinds 30/60, I have Q8o in the big blind with 945 in chips
Two limpers, I complete, Schaubs checks his option.
Flop QT8, two diamonds. I check, it checks around.
Turn 4, I lead for 160, Schaubs raises to 480, I shove my last 405, he calls and his Q2o is drawing dead.

Blinds 40/80, I have AA in MP with 2310 in chips
jcpeace limps, I raise to 325, all fold, he calls.
Flop JhTh6c. he checks, I shove to make it look drawy, he calls all in for 1242 with AJo. I hold.

Very next hand, I open raise JJ to 200, Schaubs reraises to 480 right behind me, all fold, I call. I barely cover him...
Flop KdJd4c. nice. I check, Schaubs leads for 640, I shove over top of him to look drawy again... and he folds...
Probably playing too fast there, but hoping he couldn't get away from AA/AK.

Anyhow, I'm middle of the pack at the break and then rake three huge pots to end the second hour in the chip lead.

Blinds 100/200, I have 66 on the button with 2700 in chips.
All fold around, I open shove, BuddyDank reshoves for 4200 (shit) I'm up against AsKh.
Flop QsJs2c. Turn 9s. Buddy misses all nine million outs on the river (Qh) and somehow I double up.

Later, blinds 120/240/25, I have 54s in the big blind and 5600 in chips
DakotaBlock opens for 720 in EP, Astin flats, I decide to call and take a flop- they both have over 5K stacks, maybe I can crush a flop.
Flop Jc4c4s. - Like that. I check, Dakota bets 1680, Astin folds, I shove, she calls almost all in with AJo and the board runs 6,6 to give me a boat.

Finally, at 200/400/50, I have A5o on the button with a 10K stack.
I open for 1150, Big Blueberry calls in the big blind with a 7K stack, ScottMc folds his blind.
Flop T95r. Blueberry donks into me for 1600, and I just don't feel it.
I shove, more as a bluff, because I should never get called with anything I beat except for QJ...
..unless Big Blueberry tries to bluffcatch and calls off her stack with 33, I hold for a 14k pot and hit the second break with 40BB, a gold mine in this tourney.

In that third hour I get ScottMC to shove 44 into my JJ and hold,
I openraise/call Mookie's shove with 33 and hold vs. his KQs when I flop a set.

So I get up to 40K when I run into a weird, weird hand.

Eight handed at 400/800/100. I cover the table, next biggest stack is 15K.
willwonka opens to 2400 from UTG with a 12K stack. I flat in MP with KK.
Joe Speaker shoves from the small blind for 7K. willwonka FLATS?
I decide, if he has AA, so be it, and reshove.
will folds after putting over half his stack in preflop. Joe shows AK
Flop has an Ace in it. will claims to have folded AK too. FML.

At least it didn't kill me that bad - but with a 55K stack if I hold and only two tables left.... man, that would have been a sweet spot to be in...

I get to be smokkee's ATM one time when I open for 2400 with 55, he shoves his button for 10K, and I really should NOT be calling in this spot.
But, I keep thinking we could be racing, I could hold, it's only 12BB, I still have 24K if I lose... and I call, run into 99, and double him up.

After I pull a lucko (open shove T2s from my small blind into Shabazz Jenkins - I have 23K, he has 8K, blinds 500/1000/125 - he calls with KJ, I spike a ten on the turn)
I get to another Mookie final table...

Seat 1: cmitch (29,252)
Seat 2: heffmike (35,265)
Seat 3: kalspeed (85,641)
Seat 4: twoblackaces (13,048)
Seat 5: smokkee (11,881)
Seat 6: Julkeus (17,909)
Seat 7: willwonka (12,102)
Seat 8: 1Queens Up1 (7,389)
Seat 9: 125Will (36,513)

Once there I'm third in chips to the splashy kalspeed and 125will, who I don't know a lot about but has the rungoot going lately.

Then it starts falling apart for once.
I felt so pwned here.

still ninehanded, blinds 600/1200/150,
Seat 1: cmitch (29,252)
Seat 2: heffmike (35,265)

folds around to cmitch's small blind, he raises to 3600, I think about reraising with JJ, but decide to flat instead...
flop K66, he tanks, bets 4800, a small bet. I don't like it, but it feels dumb to fold or raise JJ here, so I call.
turn A, he checks, I don't think I can rep the Ace here and I check behind. Pot is already about 18K.
river is the Qc, completing a backdoor flush. cmitch now blockbets(or tries to valuetown me) for 6000.
I tank and think, realize I have a pretty weak bluffcatcher at best and cmitch has to know this, I've screwed this hand up on every street and fold.

I'm probably good there 2% of the time. I may never have been ahead for all I know.

Anyhow the very next hand I have QQ, so I think, hey, this is why you fold there, whee!

1Queens up1 shoves for 7K, cmitch quickly flats, I shove for 26K. cmitch tanks and folds.
I only run into AA.
Flop AQJr. Yeah, set over set usually sucks.
Turn K, River not a T or the case Q. Down to 20K now.
cmitch says he folded AT. I hope that was a joke.... :-) Stupid case Ace.

Anyhow, so I gotta short-stack ninja, but at least the blinds are only 600/1200 so I have a little bit of time..
I get a spark of rungoot back when I openshove ATs for 15K, have Julkeus call allin for 11K with AJs, but I flop a T and take him out in 8th.

I finally run out of gas here... It's a somewhat light call, but hell, Smokkee can afford it, I would do the same thing, and I honestly want the call in that spot....I need a double up, not blinds and antes... I would rather he not spike his kicker, however...

Smokkee got mad donations from kalspeed to build that stack - hell everyone but me did - and he took my chips to a final table win over 125will...

That's great for him.

What's not great is that both guys are already in the top 10 in points, so chances are I'll be looking up at both of them next week whenever Al updates the standings.

If only I could play the Mookie for every BBT tourney I'd be in great shape...

At least I closed the week well, although I am a little disappointed in fifth - but I can't argue with a final table run... at least when I point in these things I make it count (1st/2nd/5th) because I'm not any good at farming into the points in 19th place...

maybe I forgot how to play stud....

I can never get any run goot going in these Skillz games...I keep getting chips in good and not holding... or at least try to bet for value and, uh, maybe I'm not after all.

Anyhow, some stud hands for discussion, because I think they're interesting and somewhat close.

First hour, Stud at 60/120/10. Vital stacks:

heffmike shows [Qh Qd 2d 4s 2h 7d Td] two pair, Queens and Twos
LookyMyHooky shows [Qs Qc Jh 8c 8d Tc Th] two pair, Queens and Tens
LookyMyHooky wins the pot (1,630) with two pair, Queens and Tens

Third is your standard limp/reraise for value in a multiway pot with a buried big pair. Sexymelissa kept raising and pushing every pot and would have been Gigli if Waffles didn't beat her to it, so I'm ahead of her 100% of the time.

I get donked into on fourth and raise again for value, so still standard. By now I've narrowly defined my hand as some buried big pair or I'm rolled up. I normally hate doing this, but melissa's chips were on sale, I had to get some....

Fifth is interesting. If Hooky started with (QQ)x, he just made Queens up... but I pair up and donk into him anyway after he checks. I understand flatting to get an overcall - melissa is probably drawing thin, albeit live, and is the ATM in the hand... but if I'm in front, he has to call three more streets to spike his own thin draw and find out, and you probably don't get melissa to come along every street.
If he's in front, he lets the both of us try to draw out fairly cheaply and doesn't get full value for his two pair. I didn't put him on a hand that was ahead of mine, obviously, so I may have paid him off quite a bit if he turns up the heat.
If all he has is\ (QT)J88, with a dead 9 and two dead kings, it's a horrible calldown, but after watching him play fairly well the rest of the night there's no way he'd be that fishy in that spot..

I guess check/calling down works with Queens and Tens... but it just seems like you valuetown yourself more often than not, because a decent villain's range for betting fifth/sixth/seventh into you is going to crush that holding - Queens and Deuces is really the bottom end of a reasonable range. You may get a free look at seventh if it goes check/check... but it's highly doubtful. I thought I was value betting every street, silly me...

Just seems like an interesting line. Thoughts welcome.

Anyhow, I manage to keep spiking Queens on every fifth street in razz and have to give up pots.. get up to 4800, then vs. a short stack in stud, raise/cap third vs. (95)9 with (TT)7, raise fourth to put him in.. and watch him spike jacks on fourth and sixth for two pair.

Then, a couple of stud/8 hands that just suck and basically knock me out...

Stud/8 at 250/500/40.

Or not. Ugh. He catches great, I completely brick.
Either the low got there, or a low two pair just hit, or he hit a gutter wheel.
It's obvious I'm not there yet or have one pair at best.
He bets into me, Pot is 2800 chips, I have 2500 left. I'm going to have to put 1000 more in to see the river (he is NEVER checking seventh) and I just can't envision a range where I'm not getting boned both ways and chasing to hopefully chop at best. So I fold, which is probably bad.

spotting trends early...

Man, sometimes you just know you're not going to do well....

Play the first hour of Riverchasers as TightyMcTight, never get a hand - and when I do....

Open, run into a raise and a cold fourbet shove, I fold, both guys get it in preflop with AK.
Open, run into a shove and a cold flat.. I fold, hello KK and AA...

So it's pretty apparent that it just isn't my night early on.

Everyone is donking into or threebetting me in ridiculously bad spots... where they shouldn't be bluffing, and should be playing legit hands much bolder... but the bet sizing is so suspicious, I have trivially easy folds. Plus, I have a working theory that hardly anyone in the BBT is capable of bet/folding a hand unless you bomb the pot with some silly overbet... and it's been good to me so far.

Anyhow, I manage to start monkeyshoving and chip back up to 2200 by the break, 44 of 52, whee.

Odd line... Astin opens to 400 from MP at 50/100 with a boatload of chips, I shove for 1250 right behind him... he folds, getting almost 2-1?

Anyhow, I monkeyshove a couple of more times in spots where I CAN'T BELIEVE I'm not getting called.. and then I kind of hose myself...

Blinds 60/120, I have As9h in the big blind and 2700 in chips....
Folds around to Shabazz Jenkins who open limps his button with a 3K stack, Astin completes with a 7600 stack, I think about raising/shoving, but decide to take a flop.
Flop 965 all spades.... about as good as I can hope for...
I lead for 240 into the 360 pot, Shabazz raises to 720 - another suspicious raise size - but, I'm never folding TP and the nut flush draw in that spot and shove because calling sucks, he calls with JsTs for the flopped flooosh and I do not get the fourth spade, out in 48th....

Cooler. Probably should be raising pre, but for once I figure to have the best hand preflop and can rep a wide enough range postflop that someone has to crush the board to continue, meaning EZ chippies for me. Plus, I think only a shove gets a fold... I had a weird feeling Shabazz would not fold to a standard raise there on the button, so the hand would have played out the same, oddly enough.

In other news, while it's nice to be second in points pre-Monday night, we're barely halfway through the month, so big deal... Since last week's Mookie I've been running meh, so I'm currently lacking a little bit of momentum in my ruckbox as I tread water... Working hard regardless, though..

not tactically smart

short stack ninja my way fairly deep in the Brit Blogger game with nothing notable to talk about... end up going out in 19th (points around 15th) when blind v. blind 100/200, blarrgh86 raises my blind to 600 and I ship 2500 with 33... he calls with AK, flops an A, rivers another one...

Probably not too smart... I mean, I'd been letting him raise my blinds most of the tourney and only restolen once... but he's probably not folding there and that's too much of a flip in that spot - when I should just let it go and keep staying afloat like I had been for the last hour until I can pick up some points and then start making moves...

Anyhow, what are you going to do.... rack it up tomorrow..

quickie note...

How come, when I get to the final two tables of a PLO8 tournament, I have notes on half the field that basically say, "should not be trusted with sharp instruments or be left home alone?"

I mean, congrats sir, you just played two reraised pots preflop by limp/calling with T534 and JT83 - then called shoves on the flop for half your stack with non-nut flush and gutter straight draws... I obviously cannot compete with that. I want these guys around - I just don't need them spiking in my pots... :-)

I swear if I had the time, there's some coin to be made playing these muppets, if your brain doesn't turn to goo first. No wonder people love Omaha...

hotter than Georgia asphalt....

The Mookie review… I am just running so, so sick in this tourney this year….

Blinds 20/40, I have 2915 with 5h4h on the button. TheMan2484 is already down to half his starting stack.
TheMan2484 open raises to 140 from MP after a brief pause, I flat, blinds fold.
Flop 843r, he pauses, bets 160. I call.
Turn 3c, he pauses again, shoves for 1235, almost 2x the pot. I think, decide this is a silly line for any overpair, figure him for AK/AQ and call.

His AK does not spike on the river, he’s eliminated and I’m up to 4500 in chips.

The rest of the hour goes smoothly, I chip up to 5300 and hit the first break in decent shape… Staring hour two I hit a couple of potholes… but make it back here…

Blinds 80/160, I have 4400 with 76o in the big blind.

Chippy McStacks opens for 400 UTG+1. Mattazuma flats, Blinders calls on the button, I close the action and call.
Flop 764r. Nice. I check and it sadly checks around.
Turn Jh, I go ahead and donk a pot-sized bet and all fold.

Couple of other resteals, and I chip up to 7500, then have to give some of it back before I drive Instant Tragedy nuts here..

Blinds 100/200, I have 6500 and KQo UTG+2
I open to 550, IT shoves behind me for 1430 total, folds back around…
I hate getting caught opening loose and being priced in to call (880 to win 2300 is a little better than 2-1, unless IT is only shoving AA/KK/AK here, I need to ship)….
I type “maybe I’m live”, call, and am happy to see I’m flipping with 88.
Board runs T93… 7… J… and I river a bigger straight and take IT out to get up over 8K in chips.

Next hand, I openraise 99 to 550, this time Mattazuma shoves for 1465, I call, he shows ATs. I flop a 9, which is good, since the ace comes on the river.. Up to 10K now.

Naturally, the next hand I pick up KK, openraise to 550 UTG, and all fold…..

I can run bad, though.

Blinds 120/240/25, I have 11K with AQo in MP.
I open for 775, Wadzilla shoves for 2240, I call, he shows AJo.
Flop 987r. Turn K. River T. Sigh, back down to 8600.

But it eventually evens out…

Now at 150/300/25, I have 9300 with TT UTG+1.
I open to 900, Wadzilla flats with a 3675 stack (hmmm) all fold.
Flop K96, all diamonds. I don’t have one, but hope Wadzilla doesn’t have one either and shove for 2750. He calls with AA, no diamond. Boo.
Turn Td. River not a diamond or Ac, so I suckout up to 13K.

The next big spot….

Blinds 200/400/50, I have 11.7K with TT on the button.
Blinders opens to 1200 from MP with 6400 more behind. I flat, blinds fold.
Flop 764, two clubs. Blinders shoves. I decide, hey, that’s the kind of flop I’m looking for with TT, no point in folding, and call. I get to see Ac9c, so we’re essentially flipping.

His nut flush draw and one overcard does not get there and I hold to make 20K in chips.

I don’t bet every time I have hand…

Blinds 200/400/50, I have 21K with JJ in MP.
I open to 1100, Chippy McStacks flats in the cutoff with an 11K stack, all fold.
Heads up to a Q63r flop. It checks through.
Turn 2d, completing the rainbow. I check, Chippy bets 1759, I call – mainly because I don’t believe he has a Q, which means he’s drawing thin and I’m only getting value by letting him blow me off the pot. Obv, if he has me beat already, I’m at least pot controlling and getting to showdown.
River T. I check, let chippy bet 3255, think about it, and call.
He shows 8h7h and I pick up nearly half his stack.

I sit on the big stack for a while, take out some short stacks, and chip up some more… 30K, 35K… I openlimp AA in the small blind and let lightning36’s J4 hit a JTT flop and take his stack, up to 39K.. bounce around 35-40K, then get moved to the other table to PirateLawyer’s right and need to tighten up a tad.. He’s running great with a big stack and position on me, so I’m just trying to scoop a few crumbs he’s not interested in.

Finally, on the money bubble...

Blinds 600/1200/150, five-handed, Jamyhawk opens to 4350 with 10500 more behind, I shove my 31K stack with 99, he calls off with 88 and I hold as we get to the final table.

Blinds 800/1600/200, sevenhanded - I have 54K with JJ on the button.
Twoblackaces shoves for 10K, I reshove (standard), HighOnPoker calls allin for 20K (shit).
TBA, A7o, but Jordan has KK and I do not spike. He more than doubles up, I sink back to 33K

Then we get into the big hand of the final table, one I get to watch:

My thoughts… only thing to even second guess is the preflop call with T8s… not because it’s only 10% of PirateLawyer’s stack… but because it’s nearly 20% of effective stacks (Jordan only has 53K to start the hand) - so you’re not really getting great odds, considering Jordan probably will donkbet most flops, and then you’re going to have to shove or fold… or, Jordan will check/shove over your flop bet, and then you’re playing for half your stack with T8s. I think the chances of him check/folding or bet/folding the flop are pretty slim.

This, coming from someone who would probably call with T8s as well, because I hatehatehate openraise/folding to a threebet from the blinds, regardless of stacks or odds.

Obviously, once the flop comes down the hand plays itself.

Anyhow, I short stack for a bit… then do my usual call and run goot thing…

Blinds 1000/2000/250, six handed, I have 33K with A3o in the big blind.
Cutiepiegirl696 open shoves her 10K short stack, folds around to me, I call, she shows 98o.
Flop T93. Turn 3. River A. That’ll do. Back up to 45K and I actually have a bit of room to maneuver.

Meanwhile PL gets boned again and we’re fourhanded, as Jordan and cardgrrl have all the chippies (over 100K) while me (44k) and Shabazz Jenkins (22K) are looking for handouts…

I slowly but surely start to chip away… I get up to 80K without a showdown before I ship some chips to Jordan when we both call Shabazz’s shortstacked shove on a T95 flop (me - 98, Jordan - QJ, J on the turn) and get to threehanded play. I’m the short stack but I flip that around in a few minutes.…

Jordan 94K, cardgrrl 145K, me 55K. I have KK in the small blind at 1500/3000/400.
Cardgrrl opens her button for 9K, I flat. Jordan folds.
Flop 632r, I check, cardgrrl bets 18K, I shove, she calls 27K more with A8o, I river a king as icing to take the chip lead.

Two hands later, as Lucko asks me if I have a seat, and I explain I’m not chopping, which makes him happyhappyjoyjoy…

Jordan 94K, cardgrrl 87K, me 112K. I have A6o in the big blind at 1500/3000/400.
Jordan opens for 9K, cardgrrl calls, I call.
Flop AsQh6h. cardgrrl leads for 28K, I shove, Jordan folds, she calls with Ah4h.

Board bricks out. Cooler. Now we’re heads up, and I have a pretty good chip lead.

Seat 1: HighOnPoker (84,773)
Seat 9: heffmike (209,227)

It took about 80-odd hands, maybe a half hour of heads up play.. So, the basic theme was, I felt in control and maintained the chip lead, but Jordan kept winning the big pots… well, because he had the best hand every time.

To be honest, I didn’t string him along enough… There were spots I should have flatted instead of raising his lead bets, and so I didn’t get full value when I flopped huge and wanted him to commit his stack… but that’s 20/20.

I get him down 6-1, he starts turning the aggression up, and so do I.

At 2500/5000/600, I open shove K3o into him (52K stack, 10BB effective) and he calls with A8 and holds (he flops an 8, I river a King… that gives him a four flush)

After this, I gotta admit, I lost my focus a bit… mostly because I already had a TOC seat, I took down a 90-man KO tourney an hour earlier and just didn’t have a greedy enough killer instinct. I start playing too wide open….

I’m leading 197K-97K. I limp A4o, Jordan raises to 16K, I decide to shove and get called by A8o. Yeah, I flop a 4, but Jordan rivers an 8 and I give up the chip lead.

A few hands later, with the stacks reversed… Jordan raises his button to 15K, I resteal for 95K total with T9o… He calls with KTo, and I’m not even drawing live…. Board hits neither one of us, and King-high is good FTW.

So, that was kind of disappointing.

But, at least the seat and win went to an old-schooler who’s got some game.

And I can’t complain about being finishing #2 of 98.

Should be a good points boost, at least.

‘til Sunday….

another doubleheader night...

AIPS 4, PLO tournament on Stars, singlestack, $5.50 buy-in, 9pm ET, nothing at stake but cash and a glorious banana... over 110 runners.

Mookie, NLHE tournament on Full Tilt, doublestack, $11 buy-in, 10pm ET, part of the BBT4 with some WSOP prizes involved... and we get 98 runners.

Don't know if it's meaningful or not.

So, anyway I busto 77th in incredibly boring fashion (flop a straight on a rainbow board, get it in, watch someone gutterball a bigger straight on the turn) and don't make the first break in AIPS.

But in the Mookie..... I ALMOST make magic happen again...

I finish second to this guy...... I had him dominated pretty good, at one point a 6-1 chip lead, but to his credit, he kept plugging away, didn't give up, and boned me nicely in two 70-30 hands where we got all in preflop (A8>A4, 4 on flop, 8 on river... and KT>T9) and Jordan gets the seat... I lost my focus and he took advantage like the good player he is.

BTW, I said up front when we got heads up I wasn't chopping for the seat - just to stop any of the hubbub from last year over buying spots, etc... not to be a dick or anything.

I think we should all earn our way in.
I also think if someone wants to chop heads up for a seat, that's their business.
Hey, I asked Goat about it last year, but neither one of us had a seat, so it didn't apply there.

I decided I just won't do it for this series. YMMV.

More to review later, but the night's gone late enough already....

I did take down a 90-man donk-N-go while I was running deep in the Mookie, so having a +600 night isn't all bad....

PS. I hate losing heads up. :-(

Just because an old blowup inspired the blog title to begin with...

Hoss hasn't blogged in a while.
He needs to post stuff like this more often.

JOPKE, indeed... :-) Tough night for the best player evar...

As for me, doubleheader tonite, AIPS and Mookie.
I will be surprised if I run deep in either... (reverse mojo, gogogo)

Yeah, I play PLO pretty weaktight. I never make a hand in the first hour, make some loose call downs and end up Dead Freaking Last to end the first hour, 52nd, with 745 chips... It's just not my game, period.

But hey, just three double ups to an average stack, oh joy...

I suck out and get one, but bounce out 43rd... I'd usually say more, but trust me, there was nothing interesting about this one.... next time, let's have a PLO8 tourney.... at least that one's on the schedule in a few weeks.

yay for patience & points racing, but lucko pwns.

what an odd night in Riverchasers.... besides the fact I never had

1) a hand, and
2) someone to give me action, and
3) a good flop

all at the same time during the first hour.... it was kind of hard to make any coin...

had a couple of odd moments where people had me absolutely crushed and let me off easy... as in, they didn't raise the turn or bet the river with two pair, and I properly didn't try to blow them off a hand with a busted draw, because the spidey sense was tingling... then I managed to chip back up to around 2600 right before the break, where I have KK under the gun and raise for the third straight hand, figuring I get action... and a short-stacked NumbBono wakes up with AA.

So I go to the break with 1250 and tread water in shortstack ninja style during hour two.

Qpen shove a few times, ship QQ UTG, get called by NYRamblers's AT in the SB and hold..

Somehow make it to the ante levels, where open shoving actually makes some bank... open shove 55 UTG and get a walk.

Next hand I hold KQo in the big blind. Since sophie2002 in the small blind barely has me covered, and I have less than 10BB, I already make up my mind to get it all in preflop if it folds around to her no matter what she does. She shoves and I monkey call... and of course, she has me beat with A8.

Flop AT5. boo
Turn 3d, so I back door a floosh draw along with the gutterball
River J. Bink. That figures, my one big suckout gets me going as usual....

After that, Lucko gets moved to my table in her seat and is on my direct right - which is good and bad..

Good, because I can pick him off as needed.
Bad, because he plays a very high variance game and wants to force you to play two-card poker, allin preflop a LOT.
I'm still mulling over the best way to deal with that approach... but holding nice cards helps.

Example, I have A2o in the big blind at 150/300/25 and a 4500 chip stack, lucko ships 8800 in from the small blind with Q8o, I instacall (I probably at least think about it against anyone else) and hold on a A8x flop.

More fun at 300/600/75 six handed. Smokkee, Lucko and I all have 17K in chips
Smokkee raises UTG+1 to 1600 , lucko threebets to 4800, I fourball shove with AKo. Smokkee folds, Lucko tanks and folds what I assume is either JJ/TT or total air, I show.

But, on the bubble, I actually fold a hand..

same blinds, eight handed. Breeze81 shoves for 6K UTG. Smokkee reshoves for 14K from the button. I sit there with AKo and 23K, but I don't feel like flipping for it.
I fold.
Smokkee, AKo.
Breeze81, A8s.
Eight on the turn, obviously, and it holds. Pat myself on the back for being a nit.

After the bubble pops, I shove AJs over smokkee's UTG 10BB shove with 77 and get there, so I chip up to 34K and the chip lead as we're in the points and the mobney with two tables to go...

And it all goes away in five hands....

First, I opensteal in MP with A7o for 2500 at 400/800/100. Bone_Daddy84 reships for 5900 total, I have to call getting over 2-1 and get to see A8o.
Board comes T382T and I'm down to 29K. Not awful, but annoying. That'll happen.

Then we run into the "this is why it's hard to play Lucko" portion of the tournament..

Next hand, Lucko opens to 2000 with 10K more behind. I have 66, and though his raise size screams strength, his range can be so freaking wide I feel like I probably have the best hand, so I reraise to 8K to isolate.
All fold, he shoves, I call, he shows AKo. He flops an Ace and turns another one. I'm down to 17k now.

I'm not sure about this one. I could just call for set value and not play his game, but that doesn't seem right either, because he's not deep enough and I doubt I can get him to fold the flop no matter what comes (prolly because he donk-shoves the flop before I get the chance to do anything, as he should), so it's not like that's a great line either.. thoughts?

I fold two hands until I pick up JJ in the big blind. we're up to 500/1000/125 now, so I figure lucko's openshoving from the small blind with any two cards given stack sizes..
Sure enough, he does with Q6s. I instacall, flop KK3, turn Q, river blank, I go home in 12th...

See, even when you're right, and pick him off every time with the best hand... you can't hold often enough to keep up.
He's so good at stealing chips from everyone it's like trying to kill Wolverine - you think you've got his stack chopped down, and an orbit later there it is back up to snuff again and a threat.

Oh yeah, he runs goot too. I have the inferior ruckbox, obviously. But hey, you make your own ruck... it's not like he's calling off his stack light, he shoves and forces you to make a decision.

So while I'm happy to get deep and play fairly well, the one guy ahead of me on the leaderboard, Bone_Daddy84, was points racing even better than I was and outlasted me like a cockroach, so I'm not even making up any ground there...

At least he bounced in 8th - thx lucko, 44>AK..... so it's not that bad... but man, this was a shot to put another final table in my pocket and more...

Twice now I've gotten all in preflop as a 70/30 deep in BBTs when people shove into me (KK vs AK, JJ vs Q6) and not held..

Granted, I've spiked a lot of fortunate cards to get to those points to begin with, so I have no room to bitch at all... but man, what could have been. That'll happen..

Ok, and of course Lucko wins because he pwns....

PLO tomorrow? Either I'm out in 15 minutes or make the final two tables, I'll bet.

Sunday, March 8, 2009

points racing, yeah right...

well, in a 50BB tourney, I'm not raising light OOP, and I'm not check folding this flop, heads up against a button openraiser.... Once I lede the flop I'm going down swinging with AK, holding overs and a gutter draw (didn't I just do this Wednesday?)

So, I'm holding the only hand QJ is reasonably ahead of. That's why I end up playing most of my hands so fast... I can get stacks in the middle against these kind of holdings. The fact that the AQ/QQ/KK/AA I'm representing would have lost on the river is irrelevant.

Gigli runner-up for me. That'll happen. Must change gears this week, as it's increasingly apparent everyone thinks I don't have shit every hand I bet post-flop...

Mookie time, BBT event... 5 already?

OK, so I still have the mojo working early in these tournaments...

Level 2, Blinds 20/40. I open limp 65s UTG. Cutoff raises to 120, Button coldcalls, blinds fold, I close the action and call...
Flop 973r. A well disguised double gutter. I check, cutoff checks, button pots it to 315, I peel, cutoff folds.
Turn 4, completing the rainbow. I can still turn the nutz every now and again.
I check, Burt_Cohen bets 455, I think and raise to 1100, he calls?
River 8h, I go ahead and shove, he calls with 98s (lucky for me I have no overpair there), and I get an early double up again.

This would be the highlight of the night, however. The rest of it was a learning experience.

Lesson 1: Do not try to tell a story when the villain already knows the ending.

Blinds 30/60, I have 6400 in chips and cover the table.
Breeze81 raises from MP to 150, I flat on the button with A3o, blinds fold.
Flop K22r. Breeze leads for 200, I think and raise to 600, he calls.
Turn K, he checks, I get this idea in my head I can rep a boat and knock him off of QQ-TT by checking behind and bet/raising the river, so I check.
River A, so I have a reasonable amount of showdown value, but not much.
Breeze leads for 775 after thinking it over, a third of his remaining stack.
I ignore the huge red flag of VALUETOWN on the horizon, stick with the plan and shove.... right into AK.

Lesson 2: There are people you can bluff on the river. Waffles is not one of them.

Blind v blind at 25/50, he raises to 150, I defend with 76.
Flop JT9, check check. Turn 4, check check, River T, he checks, I bet 450 into the 600 pot as a value bluff, he thinks, says he'll pay me off, and calls with A9.

It's actually a very standard call, but there are a lot of people who will fold in that spot.

After that, end up in another blind v blind spot where I raise 33, get shoved on for 10BB, call and don't get there vs. 99... so I'm really short now, until I double through with AK>AQ, and I limp to the first break with 2600 in chips..

I end up running well right after the break and get my stack back to 6500 without showing down a hand, then get moved, have to bet/fold a couple of pots, start spewing again, and then finally make rotterdammer1's night in two BvB spots.

Lesson 3: Get a read on unknowns before playing them heads up.

Blinds 100/200 I have 3800 in the small blind and cover.
I just got moved to the table an orbit ago. I don't know jack about half these guys.
Folds around, I raise KhQh to 600, rotterdammer1 calls.
Flop J96r, I check with the intention of getting it in with the gutterball, two overs, and the thought that the flop could not have hit rotterdammer1 hard.
He bets 800, I shove, he calls with... 9h7h.... damn.

I don't get there and am down to 175 chips.

As it is, I thought I had more equity there, but I'm a 37-63 dog as played, so I have to get a LOT of folds to make it worthwhile. He usually won't fold after putting in a third of his stack - plus, I forgot to check that he was from the Netherlands... Euros never fold a pair, right? :-)

I actually figured he would roll over a J or better nine if he called, but whatever, it's poker, that'll happen.

I do manage to win three straight all ins to chip back up to 2500... and I openshove into rotterdammer1 BvB again at 150/300/25 with AJs.. he calls with 33 and flops a set to get up to 14K, and I'm done in 42nd of 105.

You know, if I'm actually serious about making points runs in this thing, both monthly and for the series, I need to learn how to farm into the top 25% a little better.

There's racing for wins and racing for points, to borrow a NASCAR term. I better learn the difference quick. I have the win I need. What I need to focus on are strong finishes.

Going 48/27/1/33/42 doesn't help out that much in the grand scheme of things.

At least I goofed around on a 1/2 HORSE table with ScottMc, nzgreen, and NYRambler for an hour and pulled 25BB from the game.... I'm pretty sure I sucked all the mobneys out from the other half of the table... they were... ok players.

So, time to mellow out for a few days, enjoy an old man 36th birthday over the weekend, and get back on the hamster wheel Sunday.
