minor vents and 2009 miniroundup

****damn, poor guy has a week like this, and no one plays? That's a boo... I was signed up but forgot about it until I got a msg about the tourney being cancelled... :-(

****because I'm in the 3r on FTP instead - only in for $9 with a decent stack post break - I threeball a raiser with AK on the button and have a blind JAM FOR 120BB... and I figure, WTF let's flip... he naturally shows AA, I river Broadway.

So that was nice. Yeah, I suck.

Later on, same villain recovers and rebuilds a stack, openraises 2.5x in EP, I defend in the BB with Ks7s and over 50BB behind. Flop 9s7x2s (WHEE). I check, he bets 2/3 pot, I raise 3x his lead, he JAMS and covers me.... I have to call with this draw and see JsJx... and I don't get there.

J on the turn, fills up on the river.

As bad as I play, he's 50-50 vs. almost anything I can have when I raise him on that that flop.

People are so smrt. Me also.

****Wife picked up the Glee Season 1 DVD today (I didn't think it would get here for XMas - ergo, I didn't buy it as a gift) and it's the FREAKING NUTS.

****OK, here's the yearly analysis.

-about +30% ROI for the year on MTT/SnGs, up over 7K

-given that I started out with about 1K - not bad grinding

-Even though I spiked a handful of final tables in big MTTs and came reallyreally close to making some big runs - I need to play them less because...

-I light up SnGs, one or two table, and need to play them more.

-I won plenty of SnGs, and finished strong in some MTTs, but didn't close out anything over 100 players.. :-( almost double digit wins in tourneys between 30-100 players, but not the big brass ring...

-I hardly played any cash - which is good, I know I'm a fish in online ring games.

-The absence of a BBT5, and decline of Blogger games, is likely going to kill my ROI in 2010.

So for 2010, I just want to freaking TAKE DOWN a tourney over 100+ players. keep a nice positive overall ROI...

And yeah, making a satellite to the WSOP ME or some other major live event later in the year (once BabyGirlHeff is older) would be the Sam Cassell sized nuts....

Happy New Year, everyone....

post Xmas roundup...

Actually had a nice holiday. Much grandchild/grandparent bonding when my parents came up to visit. Got a lovely jacket from the wife - she loves her Glee CDs - all is well.

watching Redskins-Cowboys now - God, Jason Campbell is the Michigan J. Frog of quarterbacks. This is a worse season than the Petitbon season after Gibbs left the first time. Shuffle the deck chairs, whatever, bring in new everything, nothing will change, sigh...

Poker News:

- ran the Guinness Record tourney on Stars today - got past 90% of the field, cashed for $4. LOLawesome

- Also built a stack in FTP's Double Deuce (AA v QQ all in preflop Level 1 for 160BB FTW, woot) - dumped it, got it back - right when FTP's servers died around 8pm. Whee. At least I got +120 for chip chop equity, but still, cmon....

Seeing a few year in review posts now - I may do one, but cliffs notes are - ran great for 7-8 months. Can't buy a winning month since September. Still ++++ for the year, so can't complain overall.

BabyGirlHeff is happy...

although I look like a fool...

I'm probably running the Skillz/Mookie doubleheader this week and seeing if I can make a leaderboard run, maybe cash a couple of times. We shall see...

WTF, mook mincash?

Just made the bubble - 4th of 33 for a glorious $40.

What's the secret?

* Play 9% of your hands.
* Win a flip on the final table bubble (KT so good when you open shove and a ten flops vs. 77)
* Stay out of everyone's way because people just do not raise/fold pre in the Mook.
* Outnit everyone else....

I never got above 11K in chips. I let some cats implode, then just roached my way in.

Now I owe the wife the side bet I made if I cashed....

there's nothing more annoying

than a short stack three handed who

-whines about a deal over and over
-makes silly money demands before even seeing the numbers on a deal
-angle shoots you when you finally say OK heads up and click deal, type in chat "ck down" and HE STILL BETS OUT ANYWAY.
-jams hands in PLO8 raised pots preflop like KKJ2 and QTT7 and gets there....
-and ends up winning. so his shady moves and lack of integrity get rewarded.

Gee congrats, Blutsnuff.

Since you don't have a long record of playing, I guess you're either a new player and don't know any better.... or you've been pulling stunts like this for a while under a different account.

Second place sucks, but at least I'm most of the way out of the stupid hole I dug in November. Damn, this is a lot of work sometimes.

this is either stellar news or a complete disaster in the making.

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/27/brick-mortar/charles-town-r-s-wva-poker-thread-650782/#post15110797

Well, this is less than 50 miles from my house, so MAYBE I can have a decent live poker room to day trip to by mid-2010.

It would be nice if it spread a wide variety of low-limit games up to 10-20 and some decent tournaments.

What it'll probably do instead is have a bunch of 2/4 LHE, 1/2 NL, and tournaments with 50BB stacks and 20-minute blind levels that double, just like all the bar poker that's popular around here... :-( One can always hope, though.

Speaking of which, played Sunday afternoon at the local watering hole and finished 3rd/1st/busto in Level 2 for the three games, so maybe these turbo tourneys are right up my alley. Actually made a bunch of raise/fold laydowns preflop and got people to show me I was right every time...

small groove established here..

Continued a small upswing by actually final tabling and cashing in the Mookie last night... Pretty simple run, make some hands, win a flip or two, take advantage of the fact that everyone thinks I'm a bluff monster so I can valuebet or call down with relative ease... I get a decent chip lead with four to play and then make a pretty silly mistake in a limped BvB pot.

Now, it looks pretty silly C/Ring and donking into the virtual nutz... and I'm not sure why I didn't just call the turn and evaluate the river - but obv I thought I could get a hero call from an overpair or a fold from a weak club - which is silly because Bone is doing neither as played.

Naturally, I don't do anything stupid without making trips on the river - which really shouldn't change anything regarding relative hand strength, but somehow I got it in my head that I could be valuebetting there. Not sure there's really any holding Bone gets to the river with that would make setting him in a smart play. Of course, given recent history, of course he has AA there, what else do I run into in the Mook?

Anyhow, soon after that we get three-handed, he minraises his button, I ship 13BB with 88 from the blind, he snaps with QJ and I lose the flip to finish third.

Good run regardless.

hey, let's make a deal!

Played Skillz last night. Who knew a Razz SnG could take over two hours?

Played ridiculous tight for the first hour - Razz is easy when you start every hand with J high - didn't even get back over 3K in chips until 5 were left - but got on a heater, made some hands, eventually got heads up with cemfredmd down 2-1 in chips, where we actually used the dealmaking interface once I got back to even... Basic chip chop with a few bucks left over in the middle.

OK, that's not as exciting as it sounds.

heffmike: gee that was fun
cemfredmd: always wanted to try it
heffmike: yeah, same here.
heffmike: not the thrill I thought it was
cemfredmd: me either
cemfredmd: probaly more interesting with more people

Anyhow, after that I made a couple of really bad calldowns, got notched with 976 vs. 986, and ended up second... so no win #6 for the year.

Got peeps in town tonite, so not sure about Mookie. Last week I got wrapped up in Thanksgiving food prep: hard to believe it's already December....

Sunday, November 29, 2009

catching up for December.

Holiday time has been fine. I really haven't gotten anything accomplished, but that's actually OK. It's not like the leaves in the yard won't still be there next weekend.

Pokers has been way silly annoying. After getting back to break even, immediately dumped a few hundred running -40% ROI in just a few days to go even deeper in the red than I had been over the last couple of months. Damn short-run SnG/MTT variance.

Typical session: final table a $11 2R1A tourney on Stars. Winning would even out the negative run. Finish 6th or something silly like that when someone opens from the CO and tank calls my 10BB effective button shove with AQo (LOL nits). Look down, and including the cash, I'm still down $5 for the night.

Starting to read all the prep posts about the blogger gathering coming up, and am actually wishing I could get out there - except I couldn't drag along one-month old BabyGirlHeff as a card protector or something - at least my parents finally got up here to visit their granddaughter over Thanksgiving and she worked her charms on them. She basically cooed and slept while they held her during the day, then cried and stayed up until 4am for me and Jenn to make up for that :-).

Fantasy football has been a disaster this season: I win three games by 12 points total and get absolutely smoked the other eight weeks to run 9th in a 10 team league. For every smart move I make (Steve Smith off waivers, Brett Favre as a last round draft pick) I make dopey ones (draft Westbrook/Jacobs/Boldin with first three picks, drop Favre in Week 2 because I have Rivers and OldManBrent won't do shit anyway, sigh) Obv I will rethink my draft and waiver strategy next year.

I am going to have most of December off from work to burn up the rest of my vacation time and watch the daughter as Jenn starts working again. 2010 is shaping up to be a year of change, that's for sure.

One thing to wait for, though: Friday I was watching The Price Is Right for the first time in years and saw the BESTCONTESTANTEVAR! Once I find the video, the epicness will be posted...

I am flatline man.

I actually do decent in the Mook. Pick off some bluffs and cooler people right before the break - QQ v JJ, QQ v AQ in back to back hands - to get to 11K by the first break. Play overaggro (KQ into AA on a JTx flop, AQ from the button into KQ and AK in the blinds) to spiral back down to 3K, and then I get to run QQ into lightning36's AA, AGAIN, blind v. blind, to disappear 12 of 31.

Someday I will quit running into monsters in this tourney and it'll be a beautiful night.

I win a SnG for nice profit. I busto from everything else. I look down afterward and see

+$0.50

Whee.

There are times where I legitimately hate this game.
This may be one of them, and it's not even a losing session.

it's wednesday, so I post.

Life continues to move on... at one point last week, I had finally gotten myself into the black since September... then promptly nosedived down back in the hole -$250, which is about where I've been treading water for the last few weeks. Having an hourly rate of -$1 for almost three months is so stupid.

Ultimate Bet tried to win me back (I haven't played there for 3 years for a ton of reasons) with a free $25, so I'm trying to be bad bankroll management guy and see how big I can blow that mobney up. I got it up to $90 before settling back down to $26, which is approximately and appropriately (all together everyone) BREAKEVEN.

Play there has gotten LOL bad at the low stakes. I easily final tabled a PLO8 tourney there with literally no hard decisions for three hours, then got heads up with a 10-1 chip lead... and promptly pissed it away to finish second. Now that was tilting.

I am just zigging when I need to zag too much - too aggressive when I should tarp people, stationing too much against randoms that aren't going to bluff multiple streets.

Since we've got a few weeks left in 2009, I should at least try to move up in the Skillz and Mookie leaderboards - as if anyone's keeping track anymore :-( - and see about making more money for babygirlheff when I can.

I predict well...

AIPS:
Get a bye first round. play someone decent in the second round.
Get a small chip lead. Raise AQo 2.5x from the button in level 1 knowing I'm getting reraised given the flow of the match.
Get minreraised. Go ahead and shove over 70BB pre because shit, he can't call me unless he has three or four hands, and I've got great equity vs. most of them...
...except for AA, and I'm down 10-1 when I just hit one queen on the board.
Go out quickly when I end up checkraising second pair into top pair (not like it would have mattered, K6 hits two pair on the river) 60 of 81, really 64 given all the first round byes - unreal, God I suck so bad at this series this year.

Mookie:
Get up early, then keep getting checkraised on the turn and miss everything on the river when nothing gets there, finally checkraise an OESD into a flopped two pair and go busto again, 23 of 31.

Solution for monkey tilt after I play like shit for an hour?

Go play a $36 Turbo SnG, win it, make +$100 overall, and feel better about the night as a whole.

I still suck though. I can't take my own advice and analysis for shit.

I must be the low expectations clown...

because I watched the WSOP final table broadcast Tuesday night, and I actually didn't think it was all that bad, to be honest. I was actually entertained for the first time in a number of years.

Look, no one is ever going to be happy with ESPN when it comes to poker broadcasts - the days of ESPN simply showing a tournament (like the 2006 USPC at the Taj, with the Morgan/Jacob/DeMichele FT) with actual postflop play that doesn't involve a preflop shove and a two-outer are long gone.

You want that, go watch a cash game broadcast (HSP) or maybe an EPT tourney stream over the Internet. WSOP broadcasts are what they are - the bread and circuses, the silly fluff, you just gotta wade through. Yeah, it would awesome if there was a live stream without holecards - but there was a pay one in 2007 - I still remember calling Lee Childs' hand with QQ and thinking nooooooo when he folded to Yang's shove - and so many people ganked it (me included) that I doubt there will ever be one again.

That being said, at least I feel like they are trying to do a better job editing down these 20-hour sessions to a watchable 2 1/2 hours. But I'm probably a bad person to ask about this because..

- I don't try to stay in the dark about results, LOL that in the 21st century. I find out what's happening as it's happening.
- I paid attention to Twitter, PokerNews, 2+2, while the FT was going on, so I feel like I may as well have watched a live broadcast anyway.
- and because of all that, I knew the broadcast was running 30 minutes over, so I didn't get hosed on my DVR like a lot of people did.

Yeah, there's a lot of stuff that went by the boards - Schaffel's continual raise/folding, any hand showing Buchman doing anything until he busted, the J4/54 hand Cada held with 5BB to start the long rally back to begin with - but there were some nice nuggets/points of interest as well -

*Ivey folding JJ to Saout's threebet preflop - and in general, Ivey played OK at this FT - but as great as he is, even he would probably tell you playing a 20-30BB NLHE tourney stack is not in his comfort zone, and it showed. He's got seven bracelets, but none in unlimited hold them, after all - he's the anti-Hellmuth.

*Moon with his inexplicable "I had Queens" babble after the KQo fold getting over 7-1. WTF. Either he's the greatest leveler ever or thinks everyone around him is as dopey as he is. Probably both.

*Saout goes from 90M and the chip lead to out in five hands, holding QQ and 88. Yeah, tournaments suck.

*Cada.. well, he's probably a lot better at tourneys than cash games. The shoves with small pairs weren't anywhere near as sketchy as raise/calling Shulman with AJo (Happy's never shoving light enough to make calling with JackAce a stellar idea) or trying to blow Moon off of aces up with small river raise after whiffing his draw (right idea, wrong execution against the wrong guy) Still, anytime you rally from 1% of the chips in play to win, it's a nice comeback and proof you should never give up during a tournament no matter how short you are.

At least he respected the power of the LuckBox (v3.2 with the SetFlopper expansion set) and came across as a fairly levelheaded, non-douchebag 21 year old who knew he ran sosogood to get there. Also loved him hugging JohnnyBax while sweating the board instead of his parents, girl, or crew....

* Heads up was fairly interesting, actually, given that we only saw seven of 80-something hands.

I think Moon's betsizing made Cada's call with J9 fairly easy, though - he never really trapped or bombed the pot/shoved for value at this FT, so all Cada can really be worried about on a TT95 board is a draw or a better nine (which would have been silly sick) It's hard to get a feel for an erratic player who will openlimp QQ but fourball shove AJo and call off 70 million chips with QJs - but I got the impression Moon didn't want or care about the scrutiny the spotlight brings and basically just played for his own amusement - so how the hell do you read that?

Regardless, I think the casual player/bar poker cat would have found the broadcast pretty exciting - and that's good in a couple of ways for the serious player, because now the average donk will think

1) OMG, so many bad beats, so much luck involved, bigpairs never hold, I fold all my meh hands, nit up, and just get involved with the nutz...
2) or conversely, I shove all my pairs preflop because they always get there, you gotta make big bets and calls to get a stack, AQo is the nizzles...

Either way, anything that gets people playing sub-optimally, even though it increases variance, is a good thing overall.

I plan to run the AIPS HU tourney and play horrible, play the Mookie and play worse, and rely on Cadaing my way to some mobney tonight. Good times for me :-)

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

man, this is hard work..

This week's Mookie went down a standard road... I get up to 4K, go down to 2k, get back to a starting stack when JOELPOKERGOD limps UTG+1 for 120, lightning36 raises to 480 from MP, I cold fourball from the big blind with KK, and when lightning snap shoves over my raise, I'm not good enough to get away from the second nuts and call, see AA and bounce 23 of 32. It seems like I run into AA or the virtual nutz every time I play a big pot in the Mookie for the last few months.

I try and play when I have a free hour or so.. mostly PLO8 SnGs and some 100NL cash - and I'm basically treading water. While I have been playing a little too wide open with a big stack late in SnGs... it's ridiculous how much I can't get a 70/30 or 80/20 to hold in a crucial spot deep. I'm probably lucky to just be breaking even over the last two months - I can't remember the last time I ran good when it counted, as opposed to early on when it's helpful, but not mandatory...

BabyGirlHeff continues to love her Mom like you wouldn't believe, and I manage to make her cry more often than not when I hold her (probably not doing it right, or more likely, I don't have the feeding factory to make her happy) - I keep bouncing between. "Hey, she's the most alert, wonderful, mellow baby ever" and "OMG, she makes weird sounds and stuff, I hope she's OK, ohshit" on an hour by hour basis, so it's probably good that I go back to work next week and have something else to worry about.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

yes, I still can mook.

almost four tables for the Mookie Wednesday - which was a wonderful turnout, woot!

my night was eh... I get up to 6K by doing nothing all that interesting (save one spot) - then get down to two tables and run..

-TT into AK, don't hold, boo...,
-get flatted in a couple of spots where the flop just is all over villain's range and have to check/fold...,
-and finally shove AQ for 8BB from the button - into a standard UTG openlimp, then tank/minthreeball over my shove with (surprisesurprise) AA to bounce 15 of 35.

actually, the twin highlight of the night was the douche-off between JOELPOKERGOD and VBPro7 at my opening table. While they sniped at each other I got this move in...

The babygirl is amazingly good. She boggles my mind every day.

pop poop pop.

So, what have I learned in the first few days of daddyness?

-It's hard to make a crying baby happy when you aren't the one feeding her.
-You become overly fascinated and analytical about baby shit while changing diapers.
-Geez, they're really small and fragile.

Anyhow, so far so good. She seems A-OK for a newborn - I have no frame of reference, as it's the first baby I've been around, but the wife assures me she's on point.

I have dabbled in occasional PLO8 SnGs when I've got a moment and I'm watching the sleeping baby - just something to keep the mind engaged instead of watching TV or surfing Google Reader or something like that. Nothing of note to report. It's probably smarter to play a low-level cash game if I'm going to donk around, but really, I'm not doing anything that involves a huge chunk of bankroll or mental energy at the moment.

OMG, Ivey mucks a winner! - Big freaking deal. We all botch stuff sometimes. Just because he's great doesn't mean he's can't fuck up. I'm sure he finds it hilarious after the fact.

Perhaps I'll visit the Mookie tonite. We'll see. At least I have my own railbird now, lol.

oh hai there. welcome.

So yeah, that took freaking forever... Water breaks Wednesday, spend all day Thursday trying to make it happen, end up bagging up the chips and coming back for Day 2 on Friday - which again takes most of the day before finally happening around primetime... A little hairy in spots, but otherwise everyone made it out healthy and safe...

And so BabyGirlHeff arrives:

Thursday, October 22, 2009

So yeah, it's time.

Jenn's water breaks Wednesday evening. Either she goes into labor like now, or we have to head into the birthing center at oh-dark-thirty Thursday morning and nudge things along.

But, there are more important things!

Does she get to watch Glee? (sure thing, what a deliciously wacky, stupid, entertaining show - although I didn't realize it was evolving into a crazy hookup show...)

Do I get to play the Mookie? (why not? wtf else can I do now? not like I can't just pickup and leave $11 behind if we have to leave on the bubble, lol. - yeah, and usual, I get coolered like crazy - run up a big stack to 14K, then river a nut flush into a runner runner boat, shove 53 into 63 for a chop on a 33x board, call a 7BB shove from the blinds with 55 and lose to 66 on a AKQxx board, finally run QQ into K8, which runner runner straights me to finish in 7th - so much for going out on a high note... bleh)

Am I really ready? (fuck no, but w/e. babygirlheff ain't waiting for me to figure it out. I'll wing just like I do at the tables, I guess - that usually seems to work... :-))

I'm already catching breaks. My mom went to the ER yesterday with a suspected heart attack - luckily it was diagnosed as simply stress-related and she should be fine for the near-term.

So let the run goot continue. Will update with the details when it all plays out...

a pause is probably coming at a good time...

because all I have done in the last week is bubble, play bad and spew, or play good and get reamed by three outers. Or a combination of all three.

Sucked in AIPS Razz (not a surprise, that's been a bad run all year), played horribly in the last couple of Mookies by simply not focusing very hard early and herocalling too much - I'm basically been breakeven for the last couple of months after a pretty hot first 2/3rds of the year.

On the one hand, I'm hitting a lot of variance - people flopping two pair on me, getting there on draws, me whiffing coinflips - but I'm also not playing well enough to weather those inevitable, unavoidable coolers and beats. It's frustrating, because I can usually manufacture a way through these obstacles, and I'm just not doing it consistently enough.

So I anticipate this babygirlheff will get here sooner than the end of the month. We shall see. I'm sure I really have no idea what I am in for.

warmup for AIPS...

Skillz winnar last night - jeez, who would have thought a one table Razz tourney would take over two hours..

I'd have a report, but

1) There's not much to talk about when you keep making sixes and wheels with cards to come,
2) I play Razz more on autopilot than most games, so I don't even remember most of the spots,
3) I was busy flaming out every other SnG for the night, so bleh overall...

Of course, now I switch to a singlestack Razz tourney on Stars for AIPS Wednesday night, which means I will probably be lucky to make it halfway through the field.

Baby news, still waiting.

U2 show last week was solid, but after seeing them in 1987 and 2001, the cracks are starting to show in the foundation - the older tunes, which need more youthful energy and vocals, are starting to flag a bit - but newer material still sounded tight. I'm not sure I'd want to see them on their next tour, though.

FedEx Field continues to be the suck all the way around.

Unfortunately, it's mostly Prince George's County and Jack Kent Cooke's fault, so I can't blame the Danny for this one as much as I'd like.

obv this the night of slowrolls....

I really don't want this to become a cooler/bad beat blog... but really, doubleU-Tee-Eff.

Again, I'm not surprised when I get called that I'm behind - while I figure most strong Kings are calling, along with a stubborn QQ/JJ - a full house SHOULD NEVER FUCKING FOLD HERE EVER EVER EVER and that's mostly what's calling here outside of AK/AA/QQ.

But really, for $10, we're tank calling with the third nuts.
This is probably why the entire month has been one break even slog.

no, that's not a cooler... this is a cooler...

So I'm running the 50-50 last night - actually doing well, but then spew half of a 30K stack right around around the bubble trying to impress a couple of railbirds who couldn't stop talking about how bad I was - so I obliged by making some godawful threebets instead of just muting chat and playing normally. Silly me - it was entertaining, but not +EV.

I nit up and get myself back to around 25K when this happens.

So I bounce in the 110s, something like that. That'll happen.. but hopefully not that often. :-(

And here we go, in the "Heff just says F-it" part of the show.

Hand 1 - big stack is to my right and is open limping a ton because he's got like 17K and covers the table. I've been overlimping just as much behind him because he's shown the tendency to 1) slowplay big pairs and 2) call OOP with anything as deep as he is, which has created a lot of problems.

He open limps in MP at 150/300/25, I reraise to 1325 with an 8700 stack and holding 44. All folds back around to him. He tanks, and reraises to 8700 on the dot. I tank and decide to flip vs. his overs and call - because he'll never do this with a big pair, right? - but he shows QQ. FML.

But I flop a 4 anyway - board runs out with two aces and three diamonds on it as well. Boy I suck.

Hand 2 - comes like 20 minutes later, same table - so you can say my image is a little loose. I have been opening quite a few pots with the goods and getting snap folds - so I am waiting for the inevitable threeball to keep me in line.

Folds around to me on the button with 17K, I open to 1375 at 250/500/50 with 22.
Villain in the small blind, who has seemed solid, threeballs me to 3250 with a 6k stack.

Something in me just feels like this is such cheese, especially because I think this guy is good enough to pull this off - and I don't mind flipping vs. whatever junk he's making a move with. I minreraise him back, and as soon he doesn't snap shove I know this will get ugly. He gets it in with Q6s, the board runs out AKTA5 because deuces never loses and I get to hear about how bad I am again.

So anyhow, I actually am getting good at building a stack in MTTs.
What I need to do is get better at sustaining it once I get to 2x, 3x average.

In the meantime, the wife and I are heading to Tuesday night's U2 concert at the Dannydome/Mailbox here in DC, where apparently we'll be stuck in traffic for eight hours.

Hopefully babygirlheff digs the show, but not enough to make an early appearance... :-O

good for me I play other tourneys...

because if I play in a blogger tourney I am a cooler magnet.

Although honestly, I need to put my thinking cap on a little tighter here. In this spot he's NEVER showing up with a worse hand. Never ever never. Fucking horrible calldown.

I should fold to the minraise on the flop, because even my boat outs might be toast and I'm probably getting freerolled really bad. My stickiness works against me as I am a payoff wizard yet again with the second-best hand.

At least I make up for it with everything else I play, even though I'm running barely meh this month. Profitable, but the hourly rate is so LOL.

I managed to hold off a Ronnie Brown avalanche Monday night to even my FF record at 1-1 even though I'm the lowest scoring team in the league. Baseball, I think I'm holding onto a podium finsh - bronze would be OK.

I just need to get some larger momentum going. Right now I'm doing OK, but basically just grinding along and slooooowllllyy building. I don't have much time to strike, so I'd like to have one more nice run before October comes and goes and I get to be a Pop.

oh yeah, it's a definite fold. srly.

You know, if this were a real tournament, or a live event, I probably actually fold this pre with 90BB behind, because no one reraises an EP openraiser twice without AA or the other KK.

But what the hell, it's the Mookie. Someday maybe I'll actually get away from these hands when I run the second nuts into the nuts. It might help if I would actually read someone's else's hand when they turn it face up for me.

so here's where I am NOT lucky...

Just cruising at the 50-50... run up to 26K at 50/100 and top 5 in chips.. spew for awhile, then hit a couple of big hands and run back up to 48K near the bubble.... then I bust a guy and some Swiss guy sits down with 40K.... in one orbit..

-He threeballs my open a stupid huge amount (I bet 1525 at 300/60075, he repops for 7800) and I fold,
-he gets it in pre, calling a shove for over 30BB effective with JJ vs. TT and holds

Then this. I can't believe I ran into the top of his range.
He has to be this strong in a spot where he can literally be raising any two?

But honestly, I don't think I should be flatting here OOP or doing some dopey fourbet to 15K - and folding to the snap reshove? God, that actually sounds dumber than shit.

Anyway. I hate when I burn up all that good karma and spew.

I may run some mini-FTOPS/WCOOP Sunday. We will see if I'm in a good mood for it.

funny, I don't feel lucky...

for what it's worth, I think this is about as accurate an interpretation of my game as any...

http://corporationpoker.blogspot.com/2009/09/worstbeatever.html

He has to be the luckiest motherfuckin' blogger who has ever walked the earth. I have seen him put so many horrific beats on so many people it is just sick. I used to hate his game but anyone who gets that deep that much is not a fluke. He is a very good player.

I put myself in a lot of sticky spots, where when I get there, it's OMG YOU RUCKBOX.

Everyone forgets all the times I spew/get caught, don't get there, and hit the rail.

Now that I've had a chance to check all my tourney play, SnG and MTTs, over the last few years, a few trends are readily apparent.

1) It's not even funny how many 17 of 18, 54 of 57, 9 of 9, 85 of 90 type results are there. I can be busted early in a tournament pretty easily if you cooler me, or flop really well - I am very cavalier about my tournament life at that point.

2) I create a lot of my own luck. I push thin (or stupid) edges when I feel like the time is right. It can often look really, really bad. I usually do it when I'm short, or someone else is short, just to try to get back in the game or force someone else to make a tough decision for their stack. If I lose, no biggie, but if I get there, that might be the break I need right the ship and get back rolling.

Of course, I fast play my monsters the same way, so I tend to really get paid off when I actually do make a hand, which helps my overall play as well.

3) Positive ROI, up five figures lifetime in tournaments from $15 average buyins.
As dumb as it looks, it works.
The variance I court is more than made up by the times I get deep and get paid.

I really don't feel that lucky. I just gamble in spots where I feel like the payoff for winning is so much better than the downside of losing that I'll take the chance.

back at the grind, meh

So, Wednesday night I try to run a few tourneys...

AIPS Bingo/Limit Omaha-8
Mookie
the Mini-FTOPS #1...

over 16,000 people in FTOPS 1? Jeez, it's not like I have the time for a tourney that deep, but whatever... I fire it up and let the shrapnel fly..

Mookie: I really need to pay attention to this tournament more when I play it - I miss value bets, make really bad moves that work in every other tournament but this one - Stop trying to make someone fold a pair here, that doesn't happen. Anyhow, I try to TARP postflop and it backfires.

Normally, I just shove the turn, but w/o reads, I figure I can milk it better this way. Oh well. As played, when I shove the river and get called, I expect to see a handful of better holdings. KTo isn't one of them.

AIPS: as I suspected, there are a number of soft Omaha spots in the field peppered with people who actually know what they are doing. I bounce around, as is usual in these tournaments, between stacking up from these players, and giving it back when they spike. I finally get some momentum, and bink Scott out of a tourney again...

so in short, a waste of 40 bucks.....

There are a lot of WCOOP and miniFTOPS tourneys I'd like to play, but between the huge fields and limited time I have - I don't know if I can really run any more of these... beyond the Sunday tourneys, there's some PLO8 that intrigues me next Wednesday - but that's about all that fits into my schedule or bankroll.

Anyhow, baby shower upcoming this weekend. NFL begins. Should be fun regardless.

fantasy football time...

Pokerwise, it's been a little slow in terms of volume - no time lately to run anything too deep or big - need to try to fit in some WCCOP or mini-FTOPS events in September - but from a $$ standpoint, it's been going very well - I'm making very effective use of my time.

The Labor Day weekend will be spent fixing up some more things around the house, and working Monday morning (gotta volunteer for some holiday shifts) so it'll be a bit abbreviated - the kids begin school Tuesday, and babygirlHeff arrives around Halloween.

The summer has disappeared quickly.

Which means it's time for fantasy football!

I have to admit, I am nowhere near as good at FF as roto baseball (the hugochavezlovechild team is a solid third, woot, go Latinos!) basically because I feel like fantasy football is about studs and superstars, and fantasy baseball is more about the value you squeeze out on the waiver wires and the hidden gems in the 23rd pick. I've always been better at the margins than with the draftnik hairsplitting between Larry Fitzgerald or DeAngelo Williams.

So, for evaluation or laughter, here's my team after the draft last night. I haven't done a live football draft in years, so I'm way rusty on strategy - only rules I had were no Cowboys (f them) and no Redskins (season will be painful enough watching them every week in DC without them crushing my roto soul as well...)

Prolly too heavy on RB/WR, but whatever.

1. (6) Brian Westbrook RB
2. (15) Brandon Jacobs RB
3. (26) Anquan Boldin WR
4. (35) Philip Rivers QB
5. (46) Tony Gonzalez TE
6. (55) LenDale White RB
7. (66) Santonio Holmes WR
8. (75) Jonathan Stewart RB
9. (86) Donald Driver WR
10. (95) Kevin Walter WR
11. (106) Laveranues Coles WR
12. (115) Minnesota defense
13. (126) Josh Brown K
14. (135) Jerious Norwood RB
15. (146) Brent Favre, OldMan

10 team league, three spots pay. I guarantee a bubble finish. :-)

how I spent my summer pt, 2

When I'm not stacking off with KKxx on a AKTr board in Skillz PLO - because I have the third nutz, I don't care if iaatg has a better hand, I'm sucking out - oh wait, I'm not, oh well....

BabygirlHeff's room before... peeling off the same shitty panelling that was in the basement - ty, previous owners, for gluing and nailing in this horrid stuff....

BabygirlHeff's room after.

I painted the base coat for the walls, but no, I'm not a real artist - friend of the family painted the Winnie the Pooh mural. We can call in favors pretty well here at the Jenn and Heff house.

Oh, and damn straight there's an Eeyore there... Donkeys rule, obv.

No, I couldn't convince anyone to put a table or deck of cards in the mural, that would have been too much....

deep runs have to get there sooner or later....

after a Wednesday where I busto quickly from the Mookie (AK v KK all in pre and I don't get there) and then manage to lose every flip in every SnG I play, I decided to take a different tack Thursday: Just play the $55 tourneys at 9:30 and see what I could do in a large field, double stack tournament.

Well, it took a while to get going, but I end up running deep in both..

FTP, finish 77th of 1086 for +$60 profit... I flat KK on the button in a multiway pot looking to tarp, and sure enough, the open raiser spikes a set with his deuces on the J62r board and I don't resuck. Silly me.

Stars, I freaking final table bubble the 70K guaranteed - 10 of 1329, +$600 to the good.

I had an average stack with 10 players to go and managed to dump it all in a few hands. I finally openshove A4s for 15BB into 55 in the blinds that called off half his stack and held. I got pwned after playing pretty well for six hours.

Of course I also managed to shove JTo into aces and flop top two pair, so it all balanced out.... but yet another night where I can see that five-figure payout just dancing in front of me, and I can't quite get there. I should be pleased with the session, but right now I'm just grumbly that I'm not still shoving chips around.

One thing I noticed playing both tourneys simultaneously - the FTP structure plays much deeper for the first 4-5 hours - but the Stars structure flattens out nicely, around the final three tables, to allow for plenty of play late. There's merit to both ways of doing things, but I prefer things to move slower later rather than early. I tend to play better with mid-size, 30-40BB stacks anyway.

Anyhow, I'll get there someday, I hope.

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

and what I did for my Tuesday

... at pretty much the same time, finished up a 90-man KO SnG in second for about +350 in profit, and took down the Skillz Stud/8 tourney (only nine players, but a win is a win)

When I play limit tournaments, I really don't do things right - I tend to play a high-variance game and watch my stack yo-yo like crazy in the early to mid stages.

I'm always amazed how much most people agonize over calling a limit raise on the river, especially in split pot games - there are very few spots where it's proper to bet/fold.

Point 2 is probably why point 1 exists for me, lol.
I get valuetowned a LOT in limit, even when I'm playing well.

Anyhow, I ran hot and hit well at the final table and basically coolered everyone in accumulating a big stack, and went from there. Looking at leaderboard, it's my fourth Skillz win of the year (two were in the BBT4), so not too shabby.

One thing I'm noticing as I'm going through my records over the last year - I really, really play feast or famine in my tourneys and SnGs.... There's a ton of 18-person SnG streaks where I finish something like 18- 16- 18 -1 -14 - 2- 15 - which is still profitable in the long run, but man it looks ugly on paper.

No wonder people think I'm such a muppet.

how I spent my summer pt. 1

basement when we bought the house, with all sort of garishness...

basement with newly mudded/painted walls, new laminate floor, new outlets/switches, no pool table, no Brady Bunch paneling, no carpet.... - just waiting on molding to complete the floor..

Guess I can run a Heff's Contracting Service if I ever get laid off or something...

Thursday, August 13, 2009

it was great, then it sucked. man.

So Wednesday was a ridiculous night of juggling a bunch of deep stacks in three tourneys.

- The AIPS $1 rebuy
- The Mookie
- A Stars $5.50 2r1a I stumbled into via late registration....

At some point in the evening I was a top 5 stack in each tournament with a deep stack. I held the chip lead in AIPS and the Mookie simultaneously for about 15 minutes. And what do I get for this?

AIPS 17th
Stars 122th
Mookie 4th for bubble boy.

For a night where everything ran so well and I was crushing and cruising, I crashed and burned in really shitty spots....

Second hour in the Stars 5.50 2r1a - I've managed to run up a nice stack after the add-on, and if I hold here, I get a top 10 stack with almost 200 BB. Nice shove on the flop, pal. You push over 50BB out there to win 8BB in a five-way limped pot.

That one ended conventionally - I get a stack, it shrinks, it grows, it finally gets short and I run AQs into TT and AK and don't get there - 122 of 955, $3 profit, whee.

AIPS was so so strange - IT"S A ONE-DOLLAR REBUY - yet no one got silly with rebuys, half the table either sat out or left without rebuying - I ended up playing most of the first hour three and four handed with Scott Long and whoever else bothered to sit in -

I did manage to hit two big hands to run up to 13K at the break for a top 10 stack with only 5 rebuys... but whatever is going on with all these accounts from Russia and Brazil raiding the freeroll satellite to these tournaments, it's really hurting the actual play of the tournament. God forbid AIPS ever tries a six-max or heads-up event with all these absent qualifiers.

Anyhow, I play well here, but do manage to spike two outers twice for huge pots to bad beat people (KK<88 AI pre, 8 on flop - then A4 v QQ AI on J4x flop, 4 on river), so it wasn't all expert play.... And then I spew here in a spot where the villain is probably never dumb/bad enough to fold, even though I am screaming I haz flush you are drawing... Semibluff screws me again, way to spew off 50BB, big guy. Stack off drawing to three outs.

I really, really felt that fourth banana on its way - and I knew that shoving the turn was a bad idea. I hate when I get these stupid ideas in my head in crucial spots.

Ah, finally the Mookie: Here I play squeaky tight - I raise fold a lot, play very cautiously post flop, but generally get people to stack off with TP into me when I've got them crushed - and just have a HUGE stack heading to the final table - 22K at 200/400, or something like that.

And yet I start paying less attention (probably focusing on AIPS and 2r1a tables as well) slow down and the stacks get shallower... and call off in a spot I hate, but I can't really fold it postflop either. BTW, joelpokergod is starting to own my soul in a HighOnPoker-like fashion. He always freaking has it or gets there.

Now, if I cared about the $46 bubble, I should fold and get pwned there by every Ax holding he has along with the pairs that are currently ahead. - After all, I still have a second place stack with 20BB if I fold. But with 10 outs twice, and maybe I'm in front right now.... ugh.

Anyhow, what did we learn from tonight's play, which despite all it's fun, was basically a monetary wash? I mean, I cashed in two of three events for like no money.

1) What's the common factor in all these busto hands? I play an OK holding in a raised pot, and have a reasonably strong hand given the board- but that doesn't mean shit, because my hand doesn't fare well vs. any reasonable villain holding, and people who are not named heffmike do not play large pots out of position without a huge hand and/or draw. Must learn to pot control or dump those hands to multiple barrels, because most players just aren't donking into you twice in a raised pot without the goods.

2) As much as I like playing these series - I'm honestly trying to make the best, most efficient use of my time pre-babygirlheff. Playing tourneys where I only make $100 if I win may not be the smartest thing to do. Now I don't play AIPS or Mookie to make bank - I play because I'm a competitive muppet and want to win, and like the series and players - but if I'm going to spend three hours multitabling MTTs, I probably need to have a bigger potential payoff than that.

I just feel like I wasted a bunch of time by making loose GAMBOOL decisions that cost me my stack in spots where I could have folded and regrouped - if I was just a little more patient.

To be honest, I'm more just annoyed I put myself in a good position to take down multiple tournaments tonite and failed to follow through because of my own muppetness. Screw the money or the titles or whatever: I don't like it when I make poor decisions, period.

Going to be off the grid for a few days trying to install a floor, so hopefully I have a basement done by the weekend.

I actually like razz, like most people, right?

and it's never driven me nuts like Stud high - so it was good to see two full tables for Skillz Tuesday... I played like an old man nit, value bet everything and made my draws whether I needed to or not... right up until the final table.

Hands are good until the river...

Anyway, sucks to get boned like that twice, but it's Razz, that'll happen. 5th of 16 isn't awful.

Playing Razz just relaxes me in a manner unlike any other poker game - so much easier to "get there" by not actually making your hand... I always figure I'm bricking anyway, so anytime I draw well it's a little nugget of joy.

Anyhow, to update on the Hand History project - FTP finally got back in touch with me today and started shipping everything - still missing some dates, but it looks like I'm getting a reasonable amount of data back...

Wednesday is Mookie, but also the AIPS $1 rebuy.... which already has 160 players in it.
The first hour could be epic comedy. I'd be surprised if I'm under 20 rebuys.
