playing well, not rewarded...

Sunday I go to this bar poker thingy... and finish second, which is basically first loser, but play pretty damn well and make some pretty good reads and laydowns...

Then come home, play the Big Game, get to double through with 77>AJ on a 7AA flop.. then build a stack, then get coolered in a 10K pot with KK<AK when an ace flops... so I have to be short stack ninja boy for an hour... make it to the points, can almost see the final table, and then I hold AA in the small blind with a shove in front of me...

Sigh. Sometimes it just doesn't work out. Surprised the case J didn't come out as well, John hit just about every other out....  GG me, 12 of 62.

reviewing thursday - aka AQ not good...

AIPS was pretty standard - have Jenn on my right, but get owned in every pot I play.... limper in front, I raise the button, the big blind three bets enough to where shoving is suicidal and I have to fold..... Jenn limps her SB, I pot raise with TT, she calls and donks into me on a KQx flop, and I don't have enough behind to raise w/o shoving, so I fold (sigh).
I finally shove AK from the BB into an EP limper for 10 blinds, get called by KQo, and magically fade the three outer....  So I'm back to a bit over the starting 1500 stack when someone in EP opens for 350 at 50/100, I decide to shove AQ for 1600... and have the button wake up behind me with KK and I don't suck out. Standard, although I don't know if that's a good shove or not... I don't think I get enough middle pairs to fold to make up for the AA/KK/QQ/AK holdings that instacall and crush me. 95 of 143 (man that's a lot of runners)

Anyhow, Riverchasers was better early, but I kept picking up a few chips and losing them back, so after the first hour I was only up to 3500 from the 3K starting stack.... My last hand, UTG limps for 120, MP cold calls, I decide to raise to 500 from the CO with AQ... and both players call. Pot's about 1600 now, I have 3K behind.

Flop QT6 rainbow. That's about as good as I can hope for... Both players check to me, and I feel like I have to c-bet here - so I pot it and the UTG limper just calls... MP folds.

That's icky. Pot's 5K now, I have 1400 left. Turn J,. completing the rainbow.

Well, I'm kind of stuck now. UTG should NOT have AK in this spot. I figure any big hand on the flop goes ahead and raises since 1) I'm committed to call off my stack and 2) he should shut out MP from tagging along to spike a draw or two pair.. So I shove.... UTG tanks for a while.... then finally calls with... KK. I don't spike as he rivers a 9 to make a straight. 68 of 95,

Fuck me, I suck. The worst part here is this. Villain was actually thinking for a good reason. Even though he has to call here getting 6-1 odds, if you assign a tight reraising range to play back at a UTG limper (and most people do not raise an UTG limper lightly) his KK is behind everything but my AQ. AA/QQ/JJ/TT has him drawing to the last two kings, along with the OESD he just picked up, AK has the nuts on the turn.... AQ/AJ/KQ/99 are the only reasonable holdings I could have that KK beats right now. I'm just surprised he flat called twice with a player behind with KK out of position like that... I would have been sure a raise would have come on the flop at least... but anyway, I trapped myself by pushing into a better hand and getting coolered again, so I just spent the next hour clearing out old emails and watching Jenn play....

She can do things like accidentally overlimp KK on the button, call a bet on a J high flop,  min raise a blank turn, then call a donkbet on the river when the third diamond hits - and get shown AdJx.
She can also minraise a SB opening raise, get shoved into by 88, call with AQ and spike the flop and double up to the chip lead.
She can call a flop bet and check through the turn on a QQKx board, then shove the river T for a pot size bet with AJ - and get called - by something she beats....
She can limp TT in the small blind near the bubble, check raise all in on a Kxx flop, get called by K6, but spike a T on the river.

There something to be said about this kind of approach. She definitely does not steal as much as me, and thus does not get played back at or build huge pots preflop all that often. She gets a lot of folds and uncontested pots when she needs them, and can get people to pay her off or overcommit their chips when she's holding strong.  I'm realizing I need to alter my lines in these BBT3 tourneys, because what I'm doing works fine in a short-stacked SnG, but isn't ideal for a deeper-stacked MTT. I might get to try that in Sunday's Big Game, time permitting.

At least the rest of the night was good - won and upgraded a few tokens so I'm good on Hoy and Big Game buyins for a month.... finished 3rd in a 10+1 90-man knockout SnG, which was great until you realize you got hosed out of 50-100 bucks by these series of hands..

Three handed, button minraises with a 4 BB stack. I have JJ in the big blind and put him in for the rest - of course, he has AA and doubles through.
I limp by SB with JT, same guy checks his option. Flop J32. I bet, he minraises, I shove, and get called by Q2? no matter, Turn Q, River Q.
Check my option with T9 against the other player blind v blind. flop TT7, he checks, I check behind. Turn blank by a second diamond, other player bets the minimum, 10K into a 25K pot.. I raise to 30K, they call
River some low blank, but it's a third diamond. Other player shoves for pot, I shouldn't call, but feel like it may be a bluff - but get shown Q7s for the runner runner flush.,
Next hand I shove AQo, get called in both sports with 66 and some other junk, Flop Q high, but all clubs. Turn blank, River the fourth club, and the 6c6x is good enough to scoop

Anyhow. let me see if I can get untracked this week, change up a few things, and try to be a little more consistent in these tourneys.. Check that, I'm consistently out with the first half of the field... let's just try to change that first..

time out for rotogeekness....

A brief respite from maddening cards - and yeah, not only did Jenn last longer in both Riverchasers and AIPS last night, she just about final tabled AGAIN in RC and finished 11th.

Unreal. She's 2-2 in BBT3 events as far as getting points, and just missed the money last night. She has the uncanny ability to play bass-ackwards on purpose, spike, and still get paid off. I'm amazed. More on that later.

On to more important stuff.... ROTO!   Yeah, I usually try to play a free online, competitve league every season, conventional 5x5 scoring. I have a knack for finishing second all the time - the last five years have been 2nd-2nd-3rd-2nd-2nd finishes. Last year, I decided to try something different, since I got tired of keeping track of the entire baseball realm - I decided to only focus on, draft, and play Latino players.... and hugochavezlovechild was born....

(yeah, I'm half-japanese, but there's no way I'm trying to build a all-asian team - just not enough players)

Now, last year, the name was better, since I had a ton of Venezuelans on the team, but this year I managed to pick up more Dominicans - anyhow, I think I just like making my life more difficult than it needs to be... Here's the roster, with some U.S.-born players of Latin descent.

Hitters:
Victor Martinez, Venezuela
Adrian Gonzalez, California
Robinson Cano, Dominican Republic
Edwin Encarnacion, Dominican Republic
Jose Reyes, Dominican Republic
Alex Rios, Alabama/Puerto Rican
Bobby Abreu, Venezuela
Willy Taveras, Dominican Republic
Raul Ibanez, NYC
Dustin Pedroia, California
Carlos Delgado, Puerto Rico
Melky Cabrera, Dominican Republic
Marco Scutaro, Venezuela

Pitchers:
Francisco Liriano, Dominican Republic
Javier Vazquez, Puerto Rico
Francisco Cordero, Dominican Republic
Joakim Soria, Mexico
Matt Garza, California
Yovani Gallardo, Mexico
Daniel Cabrera, Dominican Republic
Franklin Morales, Venezuela
Carlos Villanueva, Dominican Republic

So we'll see how they do...

BBT3 - damn I'm torked...

and for once, not because I did something stupid, but because I trap someone perfectly in the Mookie on a dream turn card and they hit their draw anyway..... I really, really feel good about where my game is at now too. Damn this sucks, because I'm dumping the hand if I don't spike the turn, and only when the river comes bad am I toasted. Figures that the one guy I'm the least worried about at a table full of tough regulars smokes me. Freaking RNG.

BBT3 - POINTS! - CASH! - RAZZ! (caps lock, lol)

Finally managed to sustain long enough to make the money in a BBT3 event -  83 runners tonite, I go out in 11th in Skillz. Yeah, it's a Razz tourney, which makes me a brilliant monkey flinging poo at everyone, instead of an actual thinking human player, but w/e. I needed something positive to happen for once.

Which is strange, because I spent the entire first hour getting fawked by everyone. Raise a good starter, get called in three spots and brick fourth - get to fifth with the best draw against a marginal made hand, and brick two streets so bad I can't even call the river... I bled down to 1000 chips, then slowly rallied and finally picked up a sweet hand - there's no better feeling than when you know you've got two players smoked and they're giving you their stacks because they play way too loose.

Now, I know he can read a board, and knows I only have a made 9 with a redraw some of the time, and can be bluffing some of the time... But I can read his board too and HE DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING YET - and if he does make a hand on seventh it'll only be a 9 and I can still draw underneath that. I have no idea why he's making hero calls here, unless again, he's pushing every thin edge.
Later on he tried to tell me how we both had nine high on sixth, which ignores the fact I'm made with a redraw, and he isn't. Now, I'm just going to assume he made a mistake, or misremembered the board, because no one as good as he says he is can make that fundamental a mistake and mean it.
Anyway, had 17K a little while after that, which got me through the bubble just fine, and then just went completely card-dead - bringing in a lot, and not finding a spot to play for my rapidly dwindling stack. Finally went out with 86A v. 752 AI on 3rd and bricked every street.

Hey, I may suck, and will never final table a Razz tournament according to Mr. XGod. (and honestly, though I love HORSE and the occasional Razz rotation, anyone that plays Razz tourneys regularly needs a mental health checkup, or some strong meds, or both) but I squeezed everything I could out of tonight's run, so that feels good, even if it's for, like no money and little pointage.

It's a start....

BBT3, more spew, kind of... no really.. it's spewage!

So I'm Hoying, and actually cruising along, playing well, when I get moved tables, and then try this out of the big blind w/o any current reads.... Probably not a good idea to do this four hands into a new table - but honestly, I thought it would work more often than not.

Let's just say on that kind of board I expect a high pocket pair, like TT and up, to shove over top of my flop bet, but not a pocket pair as low as 77 wanting to play for stacks here with almost 30BB still behind. I should be able to get overs to fold, AA/KK can, but doesn't usually, flat preflop in this spot, so I felt like I should only be worried about pocket pairs 88-QQ making a stand here, and that'sa narrow part of his range. (I'm sure PokerStove or any smart player tells me I'm FOS here....)
I just led for a 3/4pot bet OOP with half my stack, I'm never folding, and it sure looks like I've got a pocket pair bigger than 77.
Obviously, the reality is I'm just restealing, get caught, but then catch a pretty good flop to semibluff, then gotta call the shove getting 4.5-1.
Meh. It's a good idea, bad spot, and it happens. At least this time, I feel like it was an aggressive play that didn't pan out, and it didn't mentally crush me like all the other times I donk out of these tourneys by making silly folds and calls...

By the way, one LOL moment at the end of the first hour....

SB: pokerdad13 (2,795)

Then Lucko spent the entire break talking about how bad pokerdad13 was, yadda yadda yadda..... now, he's got two more wins and three more final tables than I do in this BBT, and he really can play, so I should just STFU, but all I can think is....

- it's the last hand of the hour - a 4BB stack in the big blind will shove preflop about 99.9% of the time just to not sit around for five minutes.
- we all know Lucko will shove with any two cards, like Q4o, in this spot.
- Lucko will call a shove with any two at this point.
- why shove 54o? Let Lucko shove and most of the time when you call you are only a 40-60 dog and are drawing live -  15% of your stack isn't that much at this point - and if Lucko falls asleep or misclicks or something, you may see a flop w/o a raise.
- don't tap the glass.

Maybe I'm a retard donk, but this seems ridiculously standard here given stack sizes and when the hand is occurring. Maybe pokerdad13 does suck - but this isn't Exhibit A in the prosecution's case.

Anyway.... let me not spew with 42o for 35 blinds again anytime soon, no matter how good of an idea it seems to be.

yes, can I haz freeroll?

Battle of the Bloggers
Yay for FTP!

what, i playz live?

So Jenn and I had a pretty nice time in Pittsburgh this weekend, but we had some extra time Saturday before heading back home.... and hey, did you know there's now live poker just 45 minutes from the Steel City?  So, we decided to have a spur of the moment adventure at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort.

Yeah, it's another one of those horse/dog tracks that have added slots and gaming over the years to keep up: much like most of the Florida card rooms, the poker room sits underneath the grandstand of the racing track. It's actually a decent looking place - not Sarasota nice, but reasonable enough, with autoshufflers, decent lighting, and fairly new, although lightweight, tables and chairs. About 30-odd tables, spreading a ton of 1-2NL, a few 2-4/3-6/4-8 limit tables, and a couple of 2-5 and 5-10 NL tables.

Jenn and I sat down at a new 1-2 table and bought in for 200 apiece - I had heard
thatthe play was atrocious, but we must have sat at the tight-weakest tablein the place. While I think only one or two guys were really that good,no one was completely horrible - well, one guy was..... - but it wassuch a dead table. Usually 4-6 people to a flop, someone bet the flopand took it down, or someone bet the flop, got called, shut down on theturn and folded to pressure. I really could have played on autopilot.
Anyhow - onto the hands.

* I keep whiffing with hands like 98, JTs on the flop and bleed a few bucks until I raise 99 to $11 in EP. Jenn (on my direct left) folds, kind of laggy guy in mirrored sunglasses that just lost a big pot shoves for $55. Folds back around to me. I think and decide to gamble and call. He shows JJ, I don't spike a two outer and muck after the board runs out.

* I drop all the way to 100 before starting to rally a bit. I turn a ten-high flush against Mr. JJ and get two streets of value out of him (even though he had position, I value bet him to death all session and he reliably paid off every time)

* Then, Jenn raises to $8 UTG. three callers, I call with 88 in the big blind hoping 1) I flop a set and2) I don't stack my wife in the process.
Flop 843, two hearts. Joy.
I decide to lead out for $25 and not be tricky. Jenn calls. (not good) Someone else shoves for $113 more. I ask for a count and naturally reshove for $30 on top of that. Jenn tanks. I actually would rather have her fold, because I'm 99% sure she has an overpair, and villain has a flush draw - both of us don't need to get stacked if he spikes - but I can't really say anything here.
She folds - Villain has KhJh and doesn't spike. I win. Jenn says she folded AA. Smart, and a standard cash game fold. She knows I pretty much have to have a set to play that flop that fast.

*After that, things go smoothly until three people limp in front of me and I decide to raise AJo to $15 - I'd already done this 2-3 times with air and gotten everyone to fold - but this time one of the overlimpers calls. I don't even look at the flop and watch him as he decides to donk into me with a $25 bet?
Flop J82 rainbow.
Well, he has only about $75 behind, so I decide it's more likely he has something like KJ/QJ than something really big here - after all, I'm probably going to bet this flop 110% of the time, even with AK at this nitty table, so it's a great spot for a checkraise - so I decide to just go ahead and raise to $75 and play for stacks with TPTK like an idiot.
Now he tanks, talks about being dominated, yaddayaddayadda.... and finally shoves his last 30 in the pot. I call, and he asks me if I have Kings or Aces??????
WTF. I say of course not as he rolls over QQ. I show and ask the dealer for an ace.
Turn J.
That's good enough.

And that's how the both of us combined ended up +160 instead of -50 for the day. Play a big pot with one pair and spike a five-outer. I'm so good, lol.

Anyhow, a decent enough room, although strangely quiet and subdued... no one at our table was all that chatty or animated for a Saturday afternoon - and you'd think when West Virginia beat Duke people would at least be somewhat happy for the state school - but we may as well be in Ohio or Pennsylvania up there, so maybe not. At least no one there was Atlantic City grumpy, and I actually came out ahead for the two hour session, so it was a worthwhile side trip that paid for itself, yay.

one orbit tells the tale.

Third rotation of Stud/8 in Skillz last night - I'm about average in chips, but that's only 8 big bets at this point. Which is why you can crash and burn in one orbit just like that....

Hand1- low brings in for 100, I complete with (76)4 to 400, a T flat calls (lol), bayne raises allin to 615 with (xx)7, I threebet, the T folds and bayne is rolled up with the other two sevens..... He fills up, I don't even make a low.

Hand3- I bring in with (Kd7d)2h... everyone else (J, T, 9, 9) folds, Zeem calls with  (xx)Kc, cawfoocaw folds his King.. heads up to fourth in a limped pot.

Fourth, he has (xx)Kc7s, I get
(Kd7d)2hQc, he checks, I check
Fifth,
he has (xx)Kc7s4d, I get (Kd7d)2hQcJd, he checks, I bet, figuring he has nothing, but he calls.
Sixth, he
has (xx)Kc7s4d8h, I brick with (Kd7d)2hQcJd6c, now he bets???? and since I don't have any real hand or draw either way, I have to fold.

Hand6- still with 4200 chips - I have (TsTd)Qd, cawfoocaw brings in with (xx)7c, I complete, all fold behind, he calls - heads up to fourth

Fourth, I have
(TsTd)QdKd, he has (xx)7c2d. I bet, he calls
Fifth, I have (
TsTd)QdKdAd, he has (xx)7c2d4c, I bet (too much draw now, he doesn't have to have a low yet), he calls
Sixth,
I brick with (TsTd)QdKdAd, he has (xx)7c2d4cKc, I check, he checks behind?
Seventh, I brick again with a 6, I check call for one bet, cawfoocaw has (9c5h)7c2d4cKc3c for the runnerrunnerrunner flush and low to scoop.
I don't know how he sticks around on fourth with nothing but runner runner draws (no way he started with 753, because I get bet into SOMEWHERE in this hand before the river) but whatever. I'm used to going from scooping on sixth to being scooped on seventh by now.

Hand7- holding (6c3s)7c now with just 1800 chips, bayne brings in with (xx)4d,
Zeem calls with (xx)8d, I complete, both call, three to fourth street with a J, K, 5, and 7 dead

Fourth, I have (
6c3s)7cJc (ick) bayne catches a Q, Zeem an Ad (double ick), he bets, we both call.
Fifth, I catch (
6c3s)7cJc5s, bayne another Q, Zeem another Ace - Zeem leads, I shove hoping I have a better low draw that can backdoor into something, bayne folds, and I'm up against Zeem's (2d7d)8dAdAh. Triple ick.

He makes a 76 low and his flush, I make absolutely nothing.

I vanish 30-something of 70-something (this is a recording)

Standard.

crossroads

39th of 79 at the Hoy last night. I had a chance to end the first hour with a nice chip lead, but screwed up and couldn't pull the trigger. Only I can fold here with less than 100 blinds, because I am a complete moron. This is just embarrassing.

TripJax said he had two pair, no flush, which makes a lot more sense than a flush, since he probably thinks I have a big Ace/no club, and not a draw - or at least doesn't think I'd raise the flop with a draw in that spot. Even if he turned a junk flush, I should just call the donkbet and hope the board pairs. I know in a live game, I probably snap call, because I've done that before with reads in these spots.

This is why I'm not really any good. I got outplayed in a spot where I should just quit thinking and put the chips in the middle

That's OK, I screwed up another one just as bad.

How I don't check raise allin on the flop, or lede/shove the turn is beyond me. I might be behind, but at least I get to see the rest of the board, and I have a huge draw with nine bazillion outs.

Although, I'm sure I'm actually way behind in both spots and it's just wishful thinking. but that's the problem nowadays..... I swear, I actually do think about these things, evaluate the right moves, think about hand ranges and whatnot  - and manage to make the wrong decision every time. I fold when I should call, call when I should fold, fold when I should shove, shove when I should fold.... I'm honestly surprised now when I actually do something right.

Anyway, that's the least of it. Somehow I've manage to donk myself all the way back down to where I started the year in just one week of getting destroyed at O/8 and Stud/8. I thought it was pretty tough to drop 100 blinds at 5/10 - but guess what, not when you miss everything, people spike scoops and you really aren't any good.

I'm doing all the stupid things I've been doing for the last year and a half - playing underrolled, chasing losses, thinking that there's no way I can continue to run and play this bad - and yet it's a routine by now - small win, small win, small win, HUGE LOSS -  grindgrindgrind DUMP - play well in a tournament for an hour, make two stupid decisions and basically hang myself.

I used to be good at this - well, I used to be good at a lot of things - and the one thing Jenn asked me recently was what are my goals with poker - and I've mentioned before I didn't really have one (

Anyhow - poker goals for 2008? - simple- play better, play smarter, and end the year in the black, not bright,nuclear-glowing red.)

Yeah, I'd like to build a bankroll back up, play live some more, enjoy a tournament or two - but jeez, right now I just want to enjoy the game and not feel like it's a device destined to make me feel like a blithering idiot.

I don't know, right now I'm so discouraged with so many things. I don't even know where all my leaks are, except that they are large and out there, because no one can possibly run this bad.

I prolly play Skillz tonite because it's a mix game, bust out by making a stupid read or play, then step back and figure out what to do. I've eventually gotten waxed in anything I've tried for 18 months, despite initial success - sitNgo's, tournaments, NLHE cash, limit split/pot games - so unless there's a new game that hasn't been solved yet, I might be nearing the wall here.

I hate to admit defeat - I really know in my heart I can play this game better than most people - but the simple truth is I can't figure out a way to do what everyone else seems to be able to do - consistently turn a profit.

i see all futures but my own

so, uh, yeah, as I predicted, Jenn made it to the Riverchasers final table Thursday - finished sixth - while I didn't make it out of the first hour due to my shitty play...

My night was pretty simple - donk around, open raise A5o from LP, VinNay cold calls from the button. flop 865, I check call 2/3rd pot, intending to evaluate the turn. turn Ace, I check, he shoves for 2x pot... - and somehow, even though I only have a bluffcatcher, I quickly call and see 88 for the flopped set. Yeah, I fell for the overbet for value, but honestly, I couldn't figure out, if he actually had a big hand, wtf the bet was for. I'm not calling with one pair, I'm probably already betting or reraising with another set or the unlikely straight, and if I have something like 87, I'm probably not calling a shove on the turn anyway.... It just seemed like my range for calling the shove are sets, straights, and turned two pairs - and I'm not sure how EV that overbet really is. Anyway, I keep opening too loose and getting killed by it.
After that, I just went into monkey shove mode  - sucked out KT vs. a limped A9o, then promptly shoved AJo into an openraise for 14BB, knowing it was probably a mistake, and couldn't suck out against AA.

Meanwhile, it was interesting railing Jenn, and seeing someone play a completely different style from your own - not stealing a lot of pots preflop, extremely tight hand selection (folding AQo on the button to one MP open raise) and not a lot of splashing around before the turn on any hand she plays... She was always a short stack, but managed to nurse it to the final table where she couldn't fade QQ v. 99 all in preflop to a 9 on the flop. Shoot, there were even times near the bubble where she minraised or shoved, people were getting close to 3-1, could afford to call, and STILL folded. Nice image.  Funny thing is, even though she's fine on her own, she would still ask me about lines and what to do in certain spots.
I don't really know jack, but it's fun to think someone else believes you do. Anyhow, she did really well on her own, and I'm sure she'll play again soon.

Just not this week. Kids are out of town for the week on Spring Break visiting family - we're heading out of town ourselves on a mini-vacation - I may play early in the week, but we've got quite a few events planned and we may be otherwise indisposed..... Plus the way I've been playing and running - very Hindenberg-like - a break is probably good anyway.

Let's just say I was a little surprised to see top set there. Oh well, I'm not sure I love the minraise/minbet line, but I'm sure I've been baited like that before. I'm just looking for an excuse to checkraise the flop anyway and get it in, so that'll happen.

After that, start getting in a groove, picking up chips, and then, as usual, I stick myself in a marginal spot where I don't want to call, but don't want to fold... If corron10's deeper it's an easy fold, shallower a instacall - but I always get into these 2-1 spots with AJ/88 type hands where anything you do sucks. Naturally I turn 18 outs and don't get there.

Yeah, Lightning36 finished second, good luck transfers again.

Anyhow, also had a weird night at the Stud/8 tables where I couldn't by a pot for an hour, and then as soon as Emptyman left the table couldn't lose one for an hour. Ended up taking a small loss at LO8 and Stud/8, which always annoys me, because it usually happens when I keep missing huge two-way draws in big pots....

The wifey may take a shot at Riverchasers tonite - I'm sure I'll watch her final table in a half-snoozy but razor-sharp state.....

EDIT: I forgot how low the points go in BBT3 - I actually scored.. LOL. Now Fuel and Vinay are holding the big 0-fer collar.

This shit just puts me on monkey tilt - I understand it's a postflop game and everything, and PLO is definitely my worst game, yadayadayada... made it past the first break and then in four hands...
