yay 2009

from Brookhaven, Mississippi, wheeeeeeeeeeeeee...

As I pointed out to the wife and her friends - there's something vicious about growing up in a town like this, where they don't let people buy wine and liquor because it's a dry Baptist county, but there's nine billion pharmacies in every strip mall to medicate everyone... :-)

Don't worry, we're supplied sufficiently for the night - and I fired off some rounds from the brother-in-law's AK-47 earlier today, so I'm prepared for the new year in all aspects...

See you in 2009 - I see there's a new BBT4 to drive everyone nuts... more funfunfun...

Sunday, December 21, 2008

yeah, that's a fitting end for 2008.

yay for WBCOOP freerollaments. I'm better than this, I'm better than 287th of 369. Geez.

Long story short (and this is my 2008 in a nutshell) - I get stuck in some pretty coolerish spots, have to make a really borderline decision, then can't win a flip.

Longer story... at a table with no one I recognize except one player, which becomes important.

First hand of note - Blinds 10/20, basically with 5k starting stacks, I have Ah2h.
Folds to the SB who raises to 80, I call.
Flop Ax6h8h. TPNK with the nut draw. SB checks, I bet 120, he raises to 480, I call.
Turn 8x, he checks, I take the free card.
River K, he leads for 750, I'm pretty sure I'm getting valuetowned, but I do beat or chop with a lot of his range, so I call with aces up.... and see his AA for the turned boat.

Gee, nice case ace on the flop with two hearts. RNG obv hates me.

So I drop below 4K, but then start chipping up when this happens

Blinds 15/30, I have 4060, UTG+1 is the only known for me at this table and covers.
UTG+1 limps, MP raises to 90, I call, UTG+1 calls.
Flop 223r, I check, UTG+1 bets 120, MP folds, I call
Turn 7, completing the rainbow, I check call 330.
RIver K, I check, UTG+1 bets again, this time 1140, more of a pot size bet.
I tank for 20-30 seconds, recall he's a laggy bluffy Brazilian when I've watched him, decide his line doesn't make sense if I'm really beat, and call.
He has Ad5d for the three-barrel bluff, so I'm up above 5800 now.
He later tanked for nearly the full 90 seconds on the river before bluff shoving A8 into a set of aces a few minutes later.

From there, I chip up to 6800, drop a few chips when I hit the big pothole.

Blinds 40/80, I have 6440 behind UTG+1 with AKo.
I raise to 215, MP who has been very quiet reraises to 640 with a 4900 stack.
I decide with 60BB effective to shove instead of call or fold. I get shown KK. I do not spike.

It's 20/20 hindsight, but if I play conservative (or tight-weak) and call OOP, I still have 5500 and only get in trouble if I flop the case K or some insane combo draw.

I forget that I am not playing very tricky people as a rule, and they will only threebet hands against an EP raiser that are basically AA-QQ, with maybe AK and JJ thrown in. They aren't ever threebet/folding preflop, and aren't trying to balance their ranges with T9s or manufacture a fold with some other random holding.

It was just stupid aggressive, and I get what I deserve, I guess. Someone else probably rivers an Ace instead. I'm still not sure which way I should play that preflop, because folding is lol, calling feels weak (although probably proper), shoving seems too much given stack sizes... fourbet instead?

This is one I'm lost with - how shallow do I need to be where shoving AK preflop is standard?

I go into the first break with 1560, realize if I just would have SAT OUT THE FIRST HOUR I'd have 4500 in chips, and just sigh.

I pushbot a bunch in the second hour, finally shove TT into AK that (of course) flops an ace to vanish, gg me.

Yeah, it's a tournament, so variance rules apply - but jeez, to not even get a teeny freebie out of this, not even a step ticket... Just a capper on the year that basically saw me run in place.

I started small, built up nicely until I got completely hosed over a couple of weeks playing limit cash (geez) in the fall, and now am barely ahead of where I was January 1st.

I have pretty decent tournament results but no real time to play them.
I probably don't play enough SnGs to realize any sizeable profit and ROI%
I get fucked every time I try to play cash no matter which way I try to play.

I just feel a little frustrated and am venting right now - seems like the more experience I get, the worse I play and run. I'm heading down to Mississippi for the rest of the holidays, so I'm not likely to be playing any more tourneys this year - maybe an occasional SnG.

So 2008 - OK, way better than 07, but that's grading on a curve.
I really really want something really good to happen to me in 2009.
I'm tired of seeing doom everywhere I look.

Later - Heff

standard night

the usual when I play HORSE tourneys, this time the AIPS finale for the year.

-Play smart for an hour and change, solidly chip up, never get a dominating stack but stay in the top 10-15. Keep getting boned in O8 by making thin value bets in multiway pots on the river with two way hands - and getting nothing with the second nuts both ways.... - but make up for it in the other rotations and keep accumulating chips. However, Tilt's HORSE structure, even in a double stack, gets way way shallow in hour two and you can't afford a bad hand....

-Have some muppet open a way, way marginal hand (8522 UTG in LO8), isolate him, have him call with just a gutterball on the flop, get there on the turn, but only get one more bet out of me after checking the river.

- After dumping half the stack there, go completely card dead without any good stealing opportunities, finally spew into a buried pair of aces in Stud and bounce in 27th. Boo. I just hope someone solid takes this down.

ok, so I'm decent as long as I'm not in for any $$

Good and Bad...

Good - won my seat into the WBCOOP main during the PLO8 satellite tonight - if I had to put money on it, I would have sworn I could easily make the top 72 of a 400-person Omaha tourney - good god, bloggers play PLO8 so bad.

Bad - finished in 55th for no extra goodies, not even a step two ticket, after having a top five stack for most of the second hour.... After about Level 9, I swear I won like two pots and had maybe four hands worth playing, I shit you not. It sucks when you have about 23K with 200 players left - and 8K when the bubble bursts. Bad position, bad plays, bad cards, bleh.
By the way, it's criminal that someone who started stalling 30 places from the bubble just made it in 72nd and ended up 47th **yeah, Pinkypollo from Madrid, you mope, you suck**

More Bad - got completely pwned in the Mookie, Dookie, and anything else I played tonite. All my run goot was in the freeroll. Nothing good happened, no action on any big hands, folded to three bets too much, lost every coin flip.... Yawn.

Oh well, as least I get to chase some decent freebies on Sunday, and freeroll the other sattys if I feel like it.

yay and nay

So, while it's not bad to have this WBCOOP set up like it is with all these qualifying satellites, the times are a little difficult... actually times are good, but my schedule is not, lol.
I was a little surprised to see only 450 runners for a PLO tourney Monday.... which isn't a bad ratio for 72 seats. Anyhow, I play PLO bad and bounce somewhere in hour 2 about halfway through the field. I don't know how many more of these I'm going to be able to make, but I'll give it the old college try.

In other "live poker is rigged" moments... five-handed at a free bar poker tournament. Blinds 2k/4k, you have 42K in chips on the button, only the BB covers you.
Cutoff opens for 12K with 12 more behind. You look down at AJo on the button and decide to shove, even though the raise size smells like a better hand. SB decides to call all in. BB decides to shove over top of everyone. Cutoff sighs, mucks TT face up.
SB has AQo
BB has AQs
Board blanks out until a J hits on the river, lol.

Another hand I get to watch.
Big stack on the button min raises. SB minraises back. Button calls.
Flop T74. SB shoves, Button calls.
SB has Aces. Button, T4o.
I call for a seven ball on the turn. Sure enough, 7 on the turn.
River..... 4 for the boat.

You'd swear no one actually shuffles these cards between hands.

oh my....

yeah, well, this wasn't the way I expected the hand to play out in last night's Mookie....

Oh. My. Indeed.

I mention because at the final table, Numb managed to shove A9 into A8, AQ into AJ, and in the hand just before this one, KK into JJ, and held (big shocker to someone like me) every time. He was definitely catching cards...

So, I'm just 80% preflop, and 98.3% after the flop (yeah,, I checked) to have almost 2/3rds of the remaining chips four handed... Yeah, big sigh.

I almost decided to flat preflop too, or just shove - but even though I'm sort of face up here, I figured maybe I can get someone to make a mistake if I look like I'm making a move/squeezing here and do the stupid threebet... anyway...

Lucky to get there to begin with, as I was the short stack with two tables left and had to suck out against Joanne1111 -- KT (button) vs my AQ (big blind) on a bad stop and go, get it in on a Kxx flop, BINK the A turn -- and LJ -- KQ (small blind) shoves into my A9, K76 flop, turn 8s three spades on board, LJ has the Ks, river BINK T -- before she shoved on me again the next orbit BvB with 75s, and I turned quads with my KK.

So I got to the final table with the chip lead and really felt like I was gonna take down #4 this year... right until that river.

What did I say about those 70-30s and 80-20s?
I forgot to include the 98-2s, I guess. :-(

maybe I don't hate PLO as bad as I thought,.

anyhow, week 2 of this NYRPS... and it's PLO six-handed, which I've played once in my life.... so surprisingly enough I actually made it past half the field here... for not knowing the game real well, I played pretty decent, probably because I held back my natural aggressiveness and played a lot postflop.

One thing I'm noticing, though - people play... uh, interesting here in Rambler's tourneys.
Much more loosey-goosey than other tourneys, like this bustout hand.

Seat 6: Zeem (big blind) folded before the Flop

Yeah. So that would have got me close to a chip lead, instead I'm out in 12th.

Later I get to watch the same guy raise pot, get threebet by MiamiDon, decide to four-bet shove with KKxx, no suits, and no fold equity... runs into AAxx, of course, but flops a K anyway.

So, yeah, the key is to get it in way behind and spike, obv.

Otherwise, getting into the nasty habit of bubbling every SnG I play when I get it in good and can't fade the 70-30 or 80-20.

Managed to final table a PLO8 tourney, but finished 9th for like no real mobney.

Just one time, I'd like to run normal. If my 70-30s and 80-20s actually ran that way, instead of 50-50 or worse, I'd actually be doing pretty well. Ugh.

Wednesday, December 3, 2008

yeah, I'm definitely playing meh now.

I'm starting to make these early outs a habit. Must slow down.

25/50, I basically have the 3K starting stack in the Mookie and AQo in the big blind
EP limp, MP raises to 200, all fold to me, I think about threeballing, but with the EP limper and out of position, decide to call, limper calls.
Flop QdTd9h. I check, limper checks, MP pots it. I have a really bad feeling about this, but decide to flat, limper folds.
Turn blanks. With a 1875 pot and only 2100 behind, I decide to lede and basically get it in....

Nope, I don't run into an overpair or set.... just the nizzles, KJo. Nice preflop raise. Sigh.

God, I just suck sometimes. I had that ick sense that I was crushed on the flop, but still decided to play for stacks. I can't be folding TPTK on that flop every time though, especially in these tourneys.

Oh well. Must soul read better next time.

New Series, NYRPS, new beats...

So, I went over to support the new NYRambler series tonite - only 29 runners, but that should grow a bit over time - and had a stupid up and down first hour for a double stack full-ring tourney. Ended up out in 22nd. which was a little silly.

Was quiet at first - was washing dishes and with lilkimmer77 on my left, decided not to get too out of line early. Marked one seat at the table as the definite soft spot within an orbit - and built up a nice stack within the first twenty minutes. Then I hit a few speed bumps.

Blinds 20/40 I have 4260. Open raise QQ from EP to 120, folds around to the short stack (800) in the small blind and I'm praying he gives action. He donks the pot raise button and leaves 380 behind. I just minraise back to 720 instead of shoving because I'm amused. He actually lets the clock tick down to 15 seconds before getting the rest in with AK......
Flop 9JQ - Turn 6 - River T - cmon now.

Next hand, down to 3460. Somehow I open limp Th9h, CO raises to 120, all fold around, I call.
Flop 9s7h4h. Nice, but I fuck this up. I lede for 200, CO raises to 560, and instead of just shoving and going BANZAI!, which I intended to do... - I flat call, because "gee, it's a deep stack tourney, why get silly on the flop with a flip for 80BB?"
Moron, because this is why. Turn Ks, you check, CO bets 950 into the 1420 pot, and you figure shoving is really bad now and fold. I play bad.

Follow that up with making a couple of loose raises and bad bluff bets on the river into villains I know are not folding any piece of the board, and soon I light enough chips on fire to spew down to about 1200 chips.

Chipped up, had a strange hand with lightning 36 where he open limps for 80 UTG, I raise with AK from UTG+1 to 275, all fold, he calls. Flop 982r, he leads for 400, I tilt-shove for 1160 giving him 2-1 to call..... and he folds. Given stack sizes, I don't think I am ever folding this flop whether I have a hand or not without a huge read, so I'm not sure what the lede was for if he's not getting it in when raised...

Anyhow, I'm finally sitting around 1830 when I pick up KK in the big blind, lilkimmer77 opens for 325 UTG+1, all fold, I decide to flat call and get it in on just about any flop.
Flop QhTh3h, I weak lead for 400, he raises to 1800, I snap call and see his AQ.
It probably plays out the same if I shove preflop - I'd be shocked if he folded AQo to a momo like me preflop for 18 blinds.
Anyhow, turn 8h (I have the Kh) river Ace, boobooboo. That sucks.

There's a lot of PLO in the future here, so don't know how much more I'll be playing the series, but I like a lot of the tourneys, so we'll see.

Meanwhile, laugh at a couple of free bar poker hands I play over the weekend...

Blinds 200/400, I have 7700 in the big blind, UTG open limps, three callers behind, I decide to raise TT to... 3000? UTG flat calls (!!!) all fold behind.
Flop AQx, I check, she bets 2K into the over 7K pot, I instamuck.

Blinds 300/600, I have about 14K. I limp in EP with 55. Villain to my left raises to 2400, all fold around, I get sloppy and call off 1800 more because the blinds are in the pot and I'm silly.
Flop 246, all hearts (I have the 5h) I check, he bets a lot of chips, I just say ok and stick the rest of my stack in.
He shows 99 (with the 9h), I show and deadpan "I'm on a straight draw"

Turn blank. River 3. El-O-El.

I tell him how much more I have in my stack to match the pot, after which he starts steaming and talking about how bad I play, like I'm not there. I just say,"You're acting like I think I actually played that good or something...."

He instashoves about 8K the next hand with 84o, gets called and busts.

I think I'm getting into some bad habits playing all these goofball live tourneys.....

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

ah, so ghey...

Sucked into another meme....

We think is written by a woman (65%).

el-o-el, right?

in other gheyness, out early in hour two of the mook in 36th or something. - I tread water for 70 minutes, chip up a teeny bit, finally at 60/120, raise JJ UTG to 360, folds to the BB who shoves for 3K, I instacall because I know I'm looking at AK or a smaller pair and wanna flip at worst.... and it's AKo, K on the flop. boo.

anyway, happy turkey day all... :=)

Sunday, November 23, 2008

so I haz a not free trip now?

Sunday night Jenn and I managed to head out to the free bar poker we enjoy - it was Tournament of Champions night, since we've both won a live tourney this session - you start with 30BB with 30 min levels... and I managed to win what was a three-table turbo SnG for a "seat" to a larger tourney in Vegas next fall...

Now, I have no idea if we'd actually do this, go all the way out there for a wacky freeroll, unless we'd have some other reason to go out there next October anyway for a 2010 WSOP seat... but it's nicer to win than not.

Among my stunning winning plays, were open shoving K4o into JJ FOR MY TOURNAMENT LIFE blind on blind for 8BB - and rivering a K - then shoving almost any hand preflop into limpers when we're all on short stacks and I cover... -

raise 43o into AQo, flop Q43 (!!!), turn Q, river a meaningless but fun 4.
raise 64o into 44 blind v. blind, board blanks
44 openshoves with 2BB., you reshove from the button with A5s, blinds fold, flop comes 54x.....

which helps your image when

EP minraises, you shove with QQ from the SB for 16BB, they call off their stack with T9s and you hold..
You raise AK, someone shoves AJo into you, you call and hold
Blind v. Blind, SB open shoves for 8BB, you instacall with A8, they show K8 and you hold.

I did actually make one decent fold., though.

Six handed, 1/2K blinds, I have about 45K and cover, Button is short, BB has around 30K. Button limps, I complete in SB with 94o, BB checks dark preflop, so I check dark on the flop.
Flop 945, two hearts. BB bets half pot, button folds, I call intending to get it in on any safe turn, instead of check raising..
Turn 8 of hearts (shit) I check, BB shoves about 20K into a 12K pot. I decide to preserve my stack and fold, because I'm either slightly ahead of a pair and naked heart, or crushed by a set/str8/flush. Very tight weak, but the most obvious draws got there, and I'm still getting shoved into.... so I dump the hand.

Finally, heads up, you limp T4o, BB checks, flop 736, checks through, turn 5, they shove 2X pot with a 3, you call with the second nizzles and hold.

So one, we've learned I'm a luckbox that plays push/fold pokah decently well (and stupidly aggressive) in shorthanded SnG situations - and two, that my new prescription sunglasses are goot luck in live situations - A first and third in these tourneys the last two times I've used them, lol,

Friday, November 21, 2008

luckbox engaged, captain...

So, since I have no mobneys on Bodog, I couldn't try to get the esteemed pro bounty in tonite's Bodonkey - and I rolled back to the land of bananas and Florida pokah, the AIPS series - double stack hold em tonite, just like the Mook.

Boy, I ran like every freaking monotheistic deity you can name.... first hour must have had KK or QQ seven times, flopped two sets, and never lost a pot. Had the chip lead for most of the second hour, then started the third hour by losing a couple of races vs. shortstacks when I got the money in good preflop. Had to become a shove monkey, then double through with KJ vs. TT on a AT9 flop (it checks through, I get it in when I bink a Q on the turn)

So that's one luckbox moment, but then I hit the stupid ridiculous orbit.

Seven handed, final two tables, at 500/1000/125...

-in BB with 27k. folds to SB, who shoves 10.5K. I call with ATo. SB has AQo.
board runs out K68 J T (yay, no, boo) I spike, but lose to Broadway.

-in SB with 16.6K. EP shoves for 9K, I have AKo and reshove. EP has JJ,
board blanks out, down to 7K

-fold the button

-open shove KK and get no callers.

-fold the hijack

-UTG raises to 5K, I reshove like a dumbass from UTG+1 with TT for 9K, button shoves over top of that for 10K. UTG calls.

and the board runs out...
luckbox engaged, captain. running smooth, sir.

So I cruised with that to the final table... and just went completely card dead and tightened up way too much. I had to raise/fold a hand, which sucks when the average stack is 15bb, and couldn't find a decent spot to resteal and rebuild the stack. - I just folded my way from 8th to 4th, finally shoving AQ into A2 for like 2BB and getting outflopped.

Oh well, at least a Mike got the banana, and I final tabled two of these events in a row. I really thought I was getting banana #4, especially after that 8 binked, but not meant to be.

Now, it's early in a $10 tourney and Hoy has a lot of chips in Hand 2, so I'm not trying to make this out as a serious strat post. Just keep in mind, the guy who's entire reason for posting seems like "I'm a supergenius TAG, look at how these monkeys call and suck out on me every night..."

1) Ran a squeeze with 77 and advertised it (allin blind on the flop means I have a meh hand) and eventually got it in preflop for nearly 45BB, flipping with that middle pair.
2) Raise/called from early position with 87s - which I actually like in regular spots - except that I threebet an EP raiser from the blinds, only have 1.5x pot behind on the flop, and given stack sizes will prolly either bet/call a shove or check/fold on almost every flop - so there just aren't going to be a lot of flops where he'll be able to get the rest in with sufficient equity - and I'll pay him off.
He flops good, I probably completely whiff my hand and check/fold, putting him on a strong range. I flop good, Hoy probably whiffs and doesn't try to blow me off a hand and folds. Flop comes monotone with an Ace, I stack off drawing to a runner-runner boat. :-(

I just don't think I'm deep enough here to make this profitable; I haven't run numbers, so I could be wrong, but I think I need to have more like 4 or 5K behind here for implied odds to make this +EV.

But, let's get this straight right now. Neither play is a donk, silly play.

What they are, are aggressive plays with a wide range - yes, it's early in the tourney, strong players are looking to build a stack - but to sit here and say, oh, that guy is a TAG, he only raises big pairs and AK in this spot... pshaw. People do raise and call with a wider range than you think, period.

After all, I certainly wasn't worried that Hoy flopped a flush there - I was thinking he's got KK-JJ with a heart or has a big Ace with a heart - AxQh, AxJh, or AxTh. If he coolered me with set or AK, fine, but I should be in front, no free cards. After all, I can show up with AA/AxKh there too. Oh well, that'll happen. Hope he gets deep and writes it up well...

Anyhow, gonna try for a fourth banana tomorrow and see if the AIPS crew treats me any kinder...

because I need to push the banana photo down the screen

Mook was unremarkable. 14 of 47.

Spewed a lot of chips early calling and chasing, floated for a while, got lucky when someone decided to resteal with 96s vs. my AK and doubled through... then nothing happened... stacks were high and conditions for a decent resteal seemed nil. Probably being too nitty as usual.
Stop and go'd Lucko's button raise once (hard to do when you have 2K and he has 27K) but it didn't work a second time when I flopped a flush draw against his trip aces. I did runner runner two pair, big deal...

silly photo time

The third AIPS banana came in the mail today.

Mookie, can you start sending donkeys out for winz?

Anyhow, nothing else of note this weekend but leavesleavesleaves... More TK...

add another one....

so, I got the wifey to play the Mookie and Dookie last night - neither one of us got anywhere in the Mook (we went out right after each other, 19th and 20th), but at least I can play HA Pot-Limit bad enough to win a 13 person Dookie. It's nice when you can hit every hand.

Played like a ridiculously silly ubernit in the Mook, though.
Blinds 15/30. PirateLawyer raises in EP to 90, wifey Photojenn flats, then Columbo threebet blasts it from the button with a pot-size raise to 405. You are in the small blind with AKo and 1600 in chips (everyone covers)

Why am I folding and not shoving? Besides the fact I suck?
Anyhow... it's all good.

hey at least I voted this time

unlike 2000, when I lived in Florida and either

1) Conveniently used my newspaper job as an excuse and elected not to disturb the crucial objectivity journalism is known for.. or
2) Got lazy and flat out didn't vote...

I marked my little ballot.
We'll see how the next four years shake out... I'm not really excited or depressed - just curious.

I'll link out to a couple of posts that say it better.

Trying to run the Mook tonite. Whee.

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Well, that was embarrassingly stupid

get chips early in the Mookie, then let JDSchellnutt freaking flat me with 53s in position and pay off his river raise when the runner runner wheel gets there - and then let sprstoner pwn by flatting AA in on the button and convincing me I should check raise second pair on the flop and shove the turn... 44 of 46, what a jopke on me. Must quit playing pots OOP and trying to blow people off of holdings they are NEVER dumping, every bitch story I write starts with "I raise and get flatted..."

Oh well. That'll happen. Rays lose tonite too. boobooboo. boo. (getting into Halloween mode)

jeez, isn't this like a fold 110% of the time? Yeah, I can say, big stack pushing me around, but everyone knows I haz overpair here - when does he NOT have a T or a boat... - man, just fold and move on with a 94K stack and 300BB. Of course, it IS a 10 cent rebuy.... but I played goot here - right until the river. definite bet/fold or check/fold. Ugh.

On the other hand, actually made the money (and a final table) for the first time in an AIPS this year, go limit O8!

ADD: and winnar, banana number three. at least I don't have to be up all night like ScottMc. (still 25 guys left with a 500K stack, average over 100BBs - this could last all night, lol)

donkaments must be my thing....

Because while I'm getting my ass handed to me every time I try to play any cash games (I wish I never learned about split pot games, arrrrgh.) I can still take down a donkament every now and again..

That would be Mookie number #3 this year. Not bad. It was so similar to last time too - I was quiet early (only one showdown in my first 100 hands) won some key races to build a stack to the final table, hit one standard suckout on katiemother to double through, and really got moving once I adjusted to having sprstoner on my left. Played LGkiev heads up again, and took it down on a fairly standard hand, flopped top two pair against his top pair.

I'll take a closer look later, but I think this was so mind-numbingly standard there may not be a lot to write about. We shall see.

EDIT for the record:

I start at a table with Hoyazo on my right, sprstoner, Joanne1111 - and manage to chip up to almost 6K without ever winning a showdown – made a couple of resteals, raised some flop continuation bets, that kind of thing. Make it halfway through hour two when I hit my first pothole.

Blinds 100/200, I have 5600 in the small blind with AKo.
Two folds, jeciimd raises to 600 with a similar stack, folds around, I elect to just call, and Joanne1111 comes along for the ride in the big blind with just 1255 more behind.
Flop QdJs4s. I check, Joanne shoves, jeciimd folds, I think and decide to gamble against her one pair hand. I call, she shows TT.
Turn Ace, yay. River King, not so yay. TT spikes a straight to hold, down to 3800.

I chip back up to around 4500 when I get moved to a table with MiamiDon, Carmen, LGKiev, and apparently Waffles under the Maniac57 account. I really can’t get anything going until this hand.

Blinds 150/300/25 seven handed. Carmen openshoves UTF for 4210, I decide to ship it in with AQo for only 3855. THEN LGkiev reships for 12K and I figure I’m hammered.

LGkiev shows [As Qs] (not so bad)
carmensincity shows [7h 7c]
heffmike shows [Ah Qc]
*** FLOP *** [5c 4s 8c]
*** TURN *** [5c 4s 8c] [Kd]
*** RIVER *** [5c 4s 8c Kd] [Ac]

River is nice this time, up to 6k. Soon after that, I get a gift.

Blinds still 150/300/25, now eight handed. I have 6070 UTG with AKs and raise to 1000.
Lightning36 reraises to 3650 from the button with only 2500 behind.
I jam, he calls with AJo, doesn’t spike, and now I suddenly have 12k.

I start playing the stack well, raising enough blinds to chip up bit by bit (I had AA-QQ so many times in the tourney and got NO action every time, jeez) – then on the final table bubble I decide to take a coin flip.

Five handed, blinds 300/600/75, Miami Don openshoves UTG for 8500, I have 99, decide he has overs, and reshove for 15K. I hold up against his KTs and we head to the final table eighthanded.

Seat 1: katiemother (23,868)
Seat 2: -WYLDKARD- (4,938)
Seat 3: heffmike (24,751)

Seat 7: NYRambler (25,794)
Seat 8: LGkiev (22,114)
Seat 9: bdidde (3,950)

I basically start playing like shit and let sprstoner brutalize me for no reason.

Blinds 400/800/100 seven handed. I have 21K and open raise TT to 2500 from the cutoff.
Sprstoner reraises from the button to 7200 with a 23K stack, blinds fold, and I have a decision.

Folding seems silly.
Raising really means jamming, and with these stack sizes 1) I think I get a fold like never and 2) I’m flipping at best – sprstoner is perfectly capable of threebetting me with air, but in this spot, doing it for a third of your stack preflop with the intention of folding to a shove.. I kind of doubt it. If I shove, I better win at showdown.

So, instead of either jamming and gambling, or being a nit and folding, I do the stupid dumbass thing and call, OOP, when I’m going to be lost after the flop and have to checkfold a lot of the time.
Flop Q95, two hearts, I check, stoner predictably shoves, and I fold like a moron.

That’s nothing, I get to play ATM again in an orbit.

Same blinds, stoner has 30K UTG, I have 20K in the big blind
Stoner makes a small openraise to 1900, folds around, I call with Kc3c because I suck.
Flop 664 with two clubs, I check, stoner bets half pot, I think and call
Turn 5, I check, he bets half pot again, and I fold, despite all my draws, because, again, I suck.

I prolly should fold preflop, or checkraise the flop with the intention of GAMBOOL and getting it in, or just check fold the flop, anything but what I did – instead I just spew more chips to stoner by playing like a little girl.

So soon enough, after dusting off some more blinds, I get my one big suckout.

Still seven handed at 600/1200/150, I open shove UTG for 12500 with Ah5h.
Folds around to katiemother in the big blind with 15800, and she instacalls with AQo.
Flop has a 5, and I spike to jump up to 26700, which is good enough for second in chips.

I make it past the bubble, and start turning up my aggression. Before I can get going, though, lucktruck saves me my stack here.

Blinds 800/1600/200
UTG: sprstoner (31,204)
Button: -o-LuckTruck-o- (33,766)
SB: LGkiev (39,078), is sitting out
BB: heffmike (30,952)

Stoner makes that small openraise again to 3800, lucktruck flats on the button, I come along with QTo.

Flop T72, two hearts – I check the weak top pair, stoner bets half pot, lucktruck shoves.. which was what I was going to do, since stoner was playing really, really loose and wide at this point but I fold instead.
Stoner calls with ATs (surprise surprise), and holds against lucktruck’s T9s.
Case ten could have cost me there big time.

We get down to three players, and I tarp stoner

Button: sprstoner (73,170)
SB: LGkiev (36,078), is sitting out
BB: heffmike (25,752)

Stoner raises to 3800, I flat with KK.
Flop Q84r, I check, stoner c-bets half pot, I think and shove my last 21k in, he calls with 86o and doesn’t get there, I double through to 56k

I start threebet shoving on stoner’s opens to avoid playing OOP with him, and it seems to work – he’s not as much of a problem for me – he’s a better player, I gotta do something to make up for that gap, and preflop shoves are one ham-fisted way to do it.

Anyhow, LGKiev ends up getting sprstoner’s chips, and we end up heads up again, just like last month…
Seat 3: heffmike (70,104)
Seat 8: LGkiev (64,896)

At one point he lost connection heads up and I just kept folding until he got back – after 20 minutes of heads up, we’re about at the same point, with only 15BB effective, when I spike.

not just the mookie this time

24th in this week's extravaganza... I just cannot get anything going in this tourney for the last month or so, since I won my second Mook...

Started with a table I did not like, somehow survived the first hour without too much damage and started to chip up the hour two when I hit the wall.

yeah, so it's kind of hard to comeback from having 3BB. I did it before, but not this time...

At least I'm making a fairly decent run in the $3r on FTP tonite.. 8K guaranteed, and I've locked up a whopping $6.26 in profit entering hour 4...

prop bets are silly too....

Ok, so the wifey and I are going to a black-tie wedding in NYC Saturday evening... While we were out and about tonite, we were chatting and I convinced her to do some prop bets with me...

For the record, here we go... (numbers, like all betting lines, don't reflect anything about the actual wedding - they're the tipping points agreed upon to generate action - god, such a degen here....)

memes are silly

jeez, I'm just like PirateLawyer?

You are the Hanged Man

Self-sacrifice, Sacrifice, Devotion, Bound.

With the Hanged man there is often a sense of fatalism, waiting for something to happen. Or a fear of
loss from a situation, rather than gain.

The Hanged Man is perhaps the most fascinating card in the deck. It reflects the story of Odin who offered himself as a sacrifice in order to gain knowledge. Hanging from the world tree, wounded by a spear, given no bread or mead, he hung for nine days. On the last day, he saw on the ground runes that had fallen from the tree, understood their meaning, and, coming down, scooped them up for his own. All knowledge is to be found in these runes.

The Hanged Man, in similar fashion, is a card about suspension, not life or death. It signifies selflessness, sacrifice and prophecy. You make yourself vulnerable and in doing so, gain illumination. You see the world differently, with almost mystical insights.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

boy, am I owed some equity

21st in the Mook last night, but damn I should still be playing.

first hour, blinds 30/60, I have 3370 in the cutoff with 66
UTG+1(known trappy slowroller)limps, MP limps, I limp, oossuuu754 shoves for 1070 from the button.. all fold around - I decide to gambool and call - I hold vs. KsQs when the board blanks out..

Later I give away some mobneys to ChippyMcStacks

blinds 50/100, I am the big blind with 4900, chippy has 3160 on the button.
Chippy openraises to just 250, I defend with Ah2h.
flop A75, two spades, check check.
turn 6s, completing the flush, check check.
river 7c, pairing the board, I check, chippy finally bets 275, I snapcall and lose to Ac8c.

I guess everyone is waiting to checkraise me or something? Because just an orbit later...

I have 3580 UTG+1, Chippy is in the big blind and barely covers.
I openraise to 300 with AdKd, all fold around to Chippy who calls.
Flop Qc5d3d. he checks, I decide to check behind and take the free card.
Turn Jd (whee!) he leads 300, I call with the nizzles.
River blanks, he leads 600, I tank and shove, he calls with his flopped set (QQ) and I double up.

So I head into the first break with over 7K in chips, 3rd of 42 (52 total runners)

And the second hour is very easy to summarize. :-(

Blinds 60/120, I have 6880 on the button with JJ
All fold around, I open raise to 350, lilkimmer77 shoves from the big blind for 2500, I snapcall.
He has 22. Flop 4.. 9.. deuce. That sucks.

I float between 4K and 5K the rest of the hour until...

Blinds 150/300/25, I have 4300 on the button with TT.
UTG slowroller limps, BamBamCan raises to 1600 with a billion chips behind, I shove, all fold back around.. and when I don't get instacalled I know I've picked a great spot.
Bam has to call with 66. Flop K.. 2.. six. Yeah, that sucks too.

You really shouldn't lose two 80/20s in a row - I think it happens 20% x 20% = gee, just 4% of the time - but hey, it's only the last hand that really matters...

Anyhow, played smart, did the best I could, got the chips in the middle good. I'll take that... and hey, the new digs seem cool enough..

Welcome to the new abode

I guess this migration thingy actually worked... woot!

Anyhow, running the Mookie tonite, and we'll see what happens from there....

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

ack, this blog will selfdestruct in 30 days....

so, not that this is a sign of the apocalypse or anything (hopefully), but apparently AOL Journals is shutting down at the end of October, which means this blog will be moving elsewhere..... where that is, I don't know - apparently there will be some automated migration offered to another service, but for all I know I'll get sent to an Elbonian blog platform... anyone with any recommendations for a simple platform, shout out.....

just in the blahs at the moment.

Blahs at the Mookie too. Just up and down like a yoyo...

start with 3K, down to 2K, up to 4K, down to 2K, up to 8K, down to 4K, up to 7K - all this basically in the first 45 minutes.. and finally out in 50-something in hour 2.

Just kept running hands into bigger hands - QQ into AQ (Ace flops), JJ into QQ, AK into a pocket pair that squeezes by shoving a multiway pot preflop (I fold, and watch 55>99 by hitting a four flush when the Kd falls on the river) - JJ into a KQx flop and I get shoved into - I swear I'm better off playing crap and spiking a flop in this tourney than playing TAG with big hands.... that's the only way I ever get paid off. I make money when 57o flops trips and lose it with all my AA-JJ, AK holdings.

must update more than once a week...

Mookie tonite was blah. out in 51st.

Basically, nothing happens. I make a tight fold of an overpair when I raise preflop, only Buddeman calls from the big blind, check calls a junk flop after tanking, then donks pot on the turn.

So, I chip up slowly until two big hands.

Blinds 40/80, I have 3520 in the big blind. Buddeman only has 1495.
All fold to Buddeman's small blind, he minraises to 160. I reraise to 575 with AKo. He flats.
Flop 943r, he shoves 920, I decide to call.... and get shown 97s. I don't hit.

If I ever open minraise, then flat for a third of my stack out of position with 97s... just shoot me, please. Yes, I should put him on a big hand there... but a big hand wouldn't normally take a line of minraise, then flat preflop, then shove that flop, so anyway, w/e.

Anyhow, that throws me off enough that the next orbit, threre's two limps, Buddeman reraises to 500 from the small blind, and I decide to gambool/race and shove out of the big blind for 21BB with... just 88. He naturally has KK, and I don't hit again.

Well, I outlasted Waffles, anyway. But not Jenn.

I did bowl a 192/199/211 series over the weekend, and painted a bathroom without too much fuss, so I got that going for me...

And Thursday there's an AIPS tournament (six-max NL) I need to remember to play - and after that a weekend at Ocean City, so yay!

EDIT: well, ended up bubbling in the Dookie, and watched the wifey get quasi-slowrolled in the Mookie  - but at least i finished second in one of those sillly 90-man turbo SnGs for a plus evening, woot.
Watching Mookie try to pwn/run really goot to take down his own tourney heads up.... and no, not happening. Thought he had it locked up, but Carmen keeps raisinghis leads, getting him to fold, and takes it down.

Thursday, September 11, 2008

hey, mo mook, mo money

Ran the Mookie last night.. (proving I was sweating Speaker, too)

and that would be win #2 of 2008. ship teh mobneys.

 - and I gotta say, from three tables in, once I doubled through on a flip with JJ vs. KQo all-in preflop, I have never felt so in control, like I was going to win a tournament.. Even when I spewed mad chips on the bubble, even when I rivered an ace in a three-way pot to stay alive, even when I spewed a 5-1 chip lead heads up back to being behind.... I just was locked in and focused on sucking up every chip I could.

More later, the usual interesting blow-by-blow, once I get a chance to go through it.

EDIT as I watch JoeSpeaker final table the 28K though I should be asleep.

I sign up late to the Mookie and see my opening table has JoeSpeaker, Lucko, PirateLawyer, Astin, etc... many names. I'm quiet at first, but things get moving.

PL haz overpair?
Blinds 20/40. I have 3160. UTG limps, I limp 9h8h. PirateLawyer raises to 160
from the cutoff, all fold, I call
Heads up to a 984r flop, I check, he c-bets 280, I raise to 1000, he properly folds his overpair as I fast played that too hard - he's not the kind of player to stack off there in that spot.

I play QQ bad...
Same table, blinds 25/50, I have 3670. Lucko21 raises UTG to 175. I flat QQ in MP. Iakaris calls from the BB.
Flop Ks8h8s. Iak checks, Lucko bets 450, we both call.
Turn Ah, checks around
River Kh, checks around - Lucko's AQo beats me and Iak's Ts9s - ack. I don't like reraising a smart UTG raiser in general, and I'm not even sure why I flatted this flop.... I deserved to  lose this pot. I should at least raise the flop here, but I just screwed this up, period.

PL calls light

blinds 25/50, I have 2895 now,  I open raise KQo from the hijack, PirateLawyer calls from the button with a similar stack.
flop 8h55h, checkcheck.
turn Qc, I check intending to call, butPL checks behind.
river 4d, I finally bet 250, PL calls with Js8d.

Really folding AK?
blinds 40/80, PirateLawyer min raises UTG, Iakaris calls, Lucko calls, TheBlueHeron on the button calls - I shove JJ from the small blind for 3050.....

heffmike raises to 3,050, and is all in
Astin folds
PirateLawyer has 15 seconds left to act
PirateLawyer folds
Iakaris folds
lucko21 folds
TheBlueHeron folds
Uncalled bet of 2,890 returned to heffmike
PirateLawyer: yes I can fold AK

I'm not sure that's actually what PL has, but wow, that's a tight fold in this tourney....

I float between 3700 and 4200 forever. I make some steals, Waffles gets moved to my right, when I finally get a double up.

JJ is OK
blinds 100/200. I raise JJ to 550 from cutoff, Iakaris reraises to 1750 from BB.
I decide to shove for 5153, he calls practically allin with KQo. board blanks out.
It's a pretty standard resteal, but a light calling off of chips - then again, 1/3 of his stack's in already, so Iak can't really fold there either.

later, I catch a break....
Scottc25 limps UTG with a 3k stack at 120/240/25. I reraise with 99 to 1200 from the hijack with a 12K stack, PP Walnuts min-reraises from the cutoff to 2160 from a 6800 stack, all fold, I naturally call since his hand is pretty much face up, even though I don't have setmining odds..
flop Th9h3s. I check, he shoves with KK, I call and hold. up to 20K
After that I stay pretty quiet until the final table - picking up blinds, playing pots, but nothing ultra spewy.. but the very first hand there... it folds around to Waffles' SB at 250/500/50, he raises to 1500 with 21K, i reraise to 5000 with 88 with 23K, he tanks and folds.

I get the first two eliminations at the FT (WYLDKARD with 88>AKo, Katitude with AQ>A9) then play a weird hand against LGkiev, who I knew nothing about.

Blinds 300/600/75 - LGKiev raises to 2625 from CO with 37K, I call in BB with Ah8h with 37K we both have around the chip lead seven handed.
flop As3d4c, I check call 4500.
turn 5s, check check
river Jh, I check, he checks behind QJo. I think I need to call a river bet, but I'm not sure if it's actually a good idea in that spot. Without reads, I really thought I needed to get to showdown and see what was going on in the hand.

So, with the chip lead and over 40K in chips seven handed, naturally I start spewing on the money bubble...

spew 1
Dwal78 raises to only 1500 with 17K at 300/600/75, I call in BB with A2o and 44K
flop 9h8h3c, check check
turn 8c, I bet 2800, Dwal78 calls
river 5s, I give up and check, he checks behind with AKo

spew 2
Waffles raises to 1800 with 20K, I call in position with 9h8h and 41K
flop AcKs5d, check check
turn Js, he checks, i bet 3750, Waffles calls.
river Ts completing the flush, he checks, I have to check behind, he has AsQc and I dodge another bullet in a hand I can't bet my way out of if I tried.

really, really bad spew 3
now down to 34K at 400/800/100. folded around, I raise to 3100 with K8o from the small blind, NumbBono shoves from the big blind with 12K, I say GAMBOOL and call,
he has A2o, but the A25 flop is way good. I'M AN IDIOT.

and the very next hand....
with 22K now, MorningThunder open shoves for 12.5K, I reshove with KK from the button. AhJh spikes an A on the flop. I lose. back to below 10K, ick.

So, in the next orbit I open shove AA and AQ to no action, and then...

Well, that makes up for a lot. And LGkiev's flat in that spot makes me an extra 12K, which is a good thing. Almost back to where I was...

It's quiet past the bubble - Waffles makes a wild resteal shove with J8o against an open raise with no fold equity - he gets called by LGkiev's Q9o, which holds.... After he leaves in sixth I start running good again.

At 600/1200/200, MorningThunder shoves 11.5K with KsQs, I call with ATo, flop K but river A for me...

A few hands later, I raise the button to 4750 with AJo and 58K, JoeSpeaker calls w/28K from the BB.
flop JsTd4s. he checks, I bet 8500, pretty sure he will checkraise allin - which he does for 23K total with T9o
Turn Qh, river Jc. I hold with trips, down to three.

I stay out of the way a lot with half the chips in play, but make the occasional check-raise....

I fall all the way down to 68K... then in four hands

down 74K to 88K
LGkiev raises button to 9800, I reraise with KQo to 30K, he calls,
flop Kc9c8s, I shove 43K, he folds

up 104K to 58K now.
I limp 9h7hat 1500/3000/500. he checks.
flop Td5h3h, he leads 6800, i call
turn Ah, he leads 10K, I reraise pot to 50K (so stupidly obvious by me), he folds.

up 124K to 38K
he folds his button I get to muck 52o

up 126k to 36K.
I raise AhJh on button to 9k, he calls.
flop Kh5c8s. he checks. I think I need to bet this dry a flop and pot it to 18K.
he shoves for 9K more - that sucks - I have to call and see Kd6c. boo.
Turn Ac. yay.
river blank, i winz. Mookie #2....

BDR radio was lovely tonite too...  A nice tourney like it always is.....

Thursday, September 4, 2008

well, someone had a good night...

and I think it's a toss-up between on_thg and Sarah Palin...

Play the Mook, nothing special tonite, just can't quite win the flips.

Blinds 20/40, I have 3295,
I open limp 99 UTG. Three callers, including on_thg from the small blind with only 1020 behind.
Flop Jd9s5s. Blinds check, I lead with my set for 120 into the 160 pot, only on_thg calls.
Turn 8d. He checks, I bet 450 into the 400 pot - he only has 860 behind, and tanks before sticking the rest in. I call and see As8s.
River 7s. Boo.

I like a flop raise or donk lead better than checking this turn if you're not instantly shoving over my turn bet, but whatever.YMMV, small beer. Pretty standard, as is the next hand.

Blinds 25/50, one orbit later. I have 2125 after raise/folding 66 to a threebet preflop.
I get AhKh UTG and raise to 150. on_thg has the button and reraises to 525.
I decide to shove (kind of spewy, but I'm not flatting OOP for a 1/4 of my stack), get called with QQ, and don't spike.
He takes my last five chips the next hand when his K9 rivers a boat.

Oh well, I least I got to watch the Palin speech without distractions. She's intriguing. Granted, it's a home crowd and she is pretty much guaranteed to come across well in that environment... but she was charming and had the knack for taking shots at Obama without crossing the line to overly catty (or just batshit pissed like Rudy does). Maybe she'll be allowed to stay on the ticket now, el-o-el.

No, I'm not sold on her or the McCain ticket yet by any stretch of the imagination, though I'm probably leaning that way for a number of reasons (no, this will not become a political blog and yes, I know BOTH parties are not fans of the online pokahs) - but at least all this should make the next two months interesting.
All I feel certain about is that she will probably fare far better than most people think, regardless what actually happens in November.

Then again, I'm lousy with predictions, that's why I don't partake in challenges to beat the vig...

speaking of skillz....

small field, but hey, a win's a win. About time I got a chance to play one on these mix games on Tuesdays....

and yes, I played goot and got hit with the deck big time. (ask PirateLawyer or Astin - I started with one pair, tripped up on sixth, fiiled up on seventh and got lucky PL didn't spike so I could scoop on his crucial hand)  Patience is a good thing with a bit of gambool, I suppose.

Honestly, nothing that notable. A couple of times early when I need to make big folds I do so... couple of other times I float and spike.. and naturally there were the moments when my big stack calls a shortie in the stud rounds and gets there by seventh.... but really, once we got to 10 players or so I was on autopilot most of the time as I was trying to close out a PLO8 sit-n-go. Just the way the cards fall.

Yay me. So I've won a WWdN, a Skillz, a Mookie, two AIPS (and shit, I totally forgot about Stud/8 last week and blinded out) ... must get a Riverchasers at some point.

all skillz, bay-bee

Yeah, so now that I'm done with my work for the month, I decided to donk around everyone's favorite free bar poker tournament tonite... and I finally manage to win for once. So, obviously played like an expert and pwned all comers, right? Let's see..

QQ>AK all in on the turn doesn't get called on a rag board
AK>JT when I shove over an openraise that's priced in and hold.
AA>KK after I open limp it one freaking time, get minraised, then shove and get instacalled.
KK>99 when the nines open shove into me four handed.
QQ>AK all in preflop to the same guy as before three handed

Yeah, all skill all the way, el-o-el. Tourney are for donks. Get hit with the deck and still barely get to heads up. That's why I play, I guess....

Anyhow, now life should be much more mellow and relaxing. Yay.

nothing really changes, eh?

Had a quick chance to donk around online last night.
PLO8 still wonderful, NL tourneys.... not so much....
Some one tell me again how people manage to sustain an online bankroll?

Second hand of the 40K guaranteed on Stars.

Not that I'm playing great by any stretch of the imagination coldcalling, then shoving 100BB with AKo preflop... but, at least I'm doing something aggressive.. instead of calling a raise THREE TIMES preflop, including two allins, with 44.... or, for that matter, raising AKo out of position for 1/6th of your stack, then calling a shove.

Sigh. No one ever seems to fold small pocket pairs anymore, they always hope you have AK....

really, still alive...

and just buried in Olympicness.....

Michael Phelps is a wizard.

Jenn keeps lasting longer than me in every tournament we play together.

I'm off to a Nats game this week, so no Mookie for me again.

Kids are back this weekend.

Party time will be over soon.

home game time...

Ok, so over the weekend Jenn and I stumbled into a home game I found via 2+2 - a nice, relaxed, low limit 1-2 HORSE cash game which was quite a bit of fun... I hadn't played a live mix game in over two years, since donking around a 6-12 game at the Venetian during the 2006 WSOP.... I ran really hot early, donked some of it back, but generally played a solid game - Jenn doesn't play a lot of the ORSE games, so she struggled a bit hand reading the split pot games, but we pocketed $20 in profit, so it was a good evening overall...

People were good company, no bad apples, pretty much everyone knew how to play all the games, so it wasn't like there was a soft spot or anything - just an opportunity to play something that wasn't unlimited hold them without having to find a 40-80 game somewhere in AC, if you're even lucky.

I definitely can't make it a regular event, but I'll try to get back there soon - host is trying to run a $20 rebuy tourney during Saturday afternoons, so once I'm done stripping wallpaper and watching photos from Beijing roll by this month, I may have to try that out as well....

do they know that you know that they know

Interesting hand tonite playing Stud/8 against someone who knew who I was, but I didn't recognize them... To be honest, it drove me a little nutz, but I think I made a proper fold.

Full table. 4s brings in, Jh, Qh, Qd fold. I decide to complete with (K5)K with only a Q, 8, and 5 behind. Naturally, all call, five to fourth street.

4th, I catch the Kc. Nice to haz three cowboys. Other boards
Qd2c - 8s5d  - 5d7c - 4s4h - so there are low draws out there, but I should be in great shape regardless. I lead. Only the Q2 folds, all call, four to fifth street...

5th, I catch 7s. Boards are
8s5d9h - 5s7c2h - 4h4h6s  - so one low got there, but rest are drawing....
I say something about "good, let's all chase half the pot" and lead.

But NOW the 859 raises, and the low three bets, 446 folds.... and I can't think of any hand that should be raising here but (76)859 for a straight - because I've shown no indication of folding - getting the low to threebet me isn't likely to make me fold unless I only have the open pair. Trips are unlikely here, and If I need the boat, two 5s and at least one 7 are already dead. As it is, I'm chasing half the pot.

So I reluctantly fold, 859 caps, low calls.

6th pairs both players, 8599 vs. 5727.  Bet/the low is all in, and I get to see the cards...

(88)8599 vs. (A3)5727. Ack. He filled up anyway, so if I want to be results oriented, I saved myself a bunch of bets.

As it is, I'm wondering as a general question - like rolled up 8s play or not? I think fourth and fifth are interesting spots.

Fourth. You have the best hand 99% of the time (though not here, lol). Shouldn't you raise, make the low draws call two bets, and start building a pot since you should be getting half of it the vast majority of the time and all of it if the lows brick?

Fifth: Now that the low is here, a raise into him may make him threebet and force out the high hand you're trying to milk for extra profit in the split pot. Maybe smoothcall, let the low raise, then trap my KK7 for another bet and threebet then? Certainly no one will be folding now and we're all committed to the river.

Maybe mr. eights is crafty enough to feel like he can drive out a better high draw or trip kings by repping the straight when the nine hits, letting the low threebet and forcing me to call two cold with a one-way hand  - or, maybe he's just value betting trips and got lucky that 1) the low threebet 2) I folded and 3) he filled up on sixth anyway.....

Finally, does anyone really fold trip Kings here? Am I an uber nit?

This is what I get for trying to show the wifey HORSE in preparation for a home game this weekend.
