welcome to 2007...

   Mississippi was... interesting.  In poker news, we went down to the Gulf Coast and spent a little time at the Beau Rivage and IP in Biloxi.

   Before going there, spent some time with Jenn driving up and down U.S. 90 from Biloxi to Pass Christian and realizing that everything from the beach to about a 1/2 mile inland is still just completely bulldozed and flattened, post-Katrina.

   There's been minimal rebuilding in the area - and why would there be? Even if you wanted to rebuild your property, most of your neighbors don't look like they're coming back, and there's no business/commercial/shopping areas around without driving five miles inland, so what's the point? It would be like living in a ghost town. I can understand the desire to return and rebuild, but the totality of the situation down there makes it very tough.

   Oddly enough, her aunt lived two blocks from the Gulf in Biloxi - and that house survived with minimal damage outside of flooding, and is slowly being repaired.

    So, with that in mind, at this point, Biloxi is much like AC in the sense that there is virtually nothing outside of the casinos to keep your interest.

    The IP is an older property with a 16-table "room" - really an area partitioned from the ubiquitous slot machines on the non-smoking third floor - that seems to be OK, but nothing outstanding. - like a cleaner Taj, or a more up-to-date Tropicana. We donked around at a boring 4/8LHE game for about an hour, nothing exciting happened, except for Jenn constantly being confused by the limit structure (she hardly plays limit at all) - she cashed out up $10, I was down $80 by not taking my own advice when I three-barrel bluffed someone on every street in position - and folding when he check-raised me on the river :-(

    So, onto the Beau Rivage - which has every bit the MGM/Mirage/Steve Wynn pedigree - it does look and feel like a Vegas-level property. Parking sets up well, it's convienently located at the end of the I-110 freeway into Biloxi, there's a mall with stores inside, the restaurants are well run, and in general there's a level of comfort and quality throughout the gaming area leaps and bounds beyond what you'd expect, and certainly well ahead of any other property on the Gulf.

    The poker room - very nice, and a pleasure to play in, since by nature, southerners are less grumpy than the northeasterners that frequent AC (and it's amusing to watch Jenn interact with the average, polite southern man) - but with a couple of annoying glitches.

1) 1/2NL is a timed game, not raked - and it's a $6/down drop, which seems excessive, especially when there is ALSO a $1 drop per pot for a bad beat jackpot. On a 2/5 table, with deeper stacks, it wouldn't be as bad, but when 1/10th of a $200 stack comes off the table every hour, that eats into profits big time. At least the limit games are raked (although $5+1, instead of the $4 max in AC) - but still, the house is taking a pretty good sized cut on the Gulf.

2) Game selection was limited - 4/8 LHE, 1/2 NL, and 2/5NL - lists of interest for 2/5 and 5/10 PLO never got off the ground, and there was one 10/20 O8 game that looked moderately interesting, but I was playing with Jenn and didn't want to go to another game. It's only a 25 table room, though, so they can only spread so many games - it's not a huge deal.

3) This one is really petty - the seats don't have wheels, so they're hard to move, and more than one person, including me, nearly tipped over when leaning back in their seat in a Dabney Coleman/9-to-5 fashion...

  We pulled two quick sessions before and after getting dinner - and after the variance of live no-limit, we both cashed out about $30 ahead. Whee. Basically, my good hands (AA twice, KK, AQ) held up, but I donked off about $150 on silly crying calls on the river and one stupid three-barrel flop bluff I never should have made, so I burned through all the profit. Boo......
   Overall, I really liked the Beau Rivage and its poker room - it's a good thing I'm a tourist, though, because I think locals really get shafted by the relatively high rake in Mississippi. I've never played in Tunica, but I'm guessing it's the same up there and this is a state-wide thing, not a Gulf Coast thing - it's not like the extra two bucks is going to rebuild all the U.S. 90 bridges or something.

  So, what's next for 2007? Not sure.

Borgata Winter Poker open this month? - Nope, no time.
More bar poker and online play until the plug gets pulled? - Sure.
WSOP Circuit event at Caesars AC in March? - Probably, if there's ever a schedule out.
A Vegas trip around the World Series in June/July? - Possibly, once Jenn and I figure out our schedule.

It's all yet to be written. Hopefully good tidings to come...
